Microsoft Copilot Review 2026: One Name, Free to $99.99, and a New Home, Code and Autopilot Layout That Landed Last Week
"Microsoft Copilot" now covers almost everything: the free chat app, the Copilot features inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, the paid Microsoft 365 consumer plans, and the work version that Microsoft used to call Microsoft 365 Copilot. On Sept 25 Microsoft announced a rebuilt Copilot with Home, Code and Autopilot, and on July 29 it said it has more than 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats. It is also priced in at least nine different ways, built partly on models from OpenAI and Anthropic, and rated 1.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot. This review checks the facts against Microsoft's own pricing pages, blog, support documents and earnings call, then adds what real users say.
| Owner | Microsoft |
| Free tier | Real -- copilot.microsoft.com and the app |
| Cheapest paid plan | $9.99/mo (Microsoft 365 Personal) |
| Paid M365 Copilot seats (Microsoft, Jul 29) | 30M+ |
| Trustpilot record | 1.6/5, 470 reviews |
The obvious choice if your work already lives in Microsoft 365. For everyone else it is a decent free app inside a confusing pricing maze.
"Microsoft's real advantage is not the model. It is that Copilot sits inside the documents, email, meetings and permissions you already have, and Microsoft lets you pick between OpenAI and Anthropic models underneath. The weakness is the same thing seen from the other side: the name, the plans and the features keep moving, the best new things are in an early-access program, and independent researchers keep finding ways to make Copilot leak data. Microsoft has patched what I could find, but the pattern is worth knowing."
My honest read: try the free app first. If you live in Word, Excel and Outlook, Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 is the cleanest consumer upgrade, and the work plans make sense mainly when your IT team can govern them. I would not pay for Copilot just because it is "the Microsoft one": Microsoft's own numbers say it has 30 million paid seats, which is a lot, but user reviews show a large unhappy minority.
Chat, Cowork, Code and Autopilot in one app, plus Copilot inside the Office apps.
According to Microsoft's Sept 25 post, the Copilot app now has three areas. Home is the new starting point, where Chat (instant answers) and Cowork (work you delegate and that runs end to end) sit together, with Word, Excel and PowerPoint built into the experience. Code lets non-developers describe an app, tracker or dashboard and have Copilot build it in a sandbox, powered by the same technology as GitHub Copilot. Autopilot (previously called Scout) is a persistent, always-on agent with its own identity, memory and computer; it is in private preview. Home and Code start in the Frontier early-access program "in the coming weeks". Around all of that sit Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, Researcher and Analyst agents, Agent Builder and Copilot Studio.
Naming alert from Microsoft's own Learn documentation: "Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is now named Microsoft Copilot Chat", with some pages still using the old names during the transition. GitHub Copilot, the coding assistant, is a separate product that JAVIS reviews on its own page, and Security Copilot and Dragon Copilot are different again.
Huge on paper in the enterprise, with Microsoft counting seats instead of users.
Microsoft FY26 Q4 earnings call, Jul 29, 2026. Seats paid for, not active users. Up from roughly 20M three months earlier per press.
Microsoft: "net seat adds more than doubling quarter-over-quarter".
Microsoft says Purview has audited over 50 billion Copilot interactions. A compliance count, not a usage count.

iOS raters are happy, Trustpilot reviewers are not, and Hacker News is split between "useful in Office" and "an AI tax".
1.6 out of 5; 11% five-star, 78% one-star. Complaints: "Microsoft has deleted all of my COPILOT chats without any fault on my end" (Oct 1); "CoPilot is an expert in guessing wrong and providing these results as correct" (Sep 16); a reviewer who says an app build "consumes $10 in 15 minutes". Praise: "Copilot equipped me with tools to build a creative website for free" (Sep 8).
Mixed and specific. One user: "the only part of copilot in m365 I really like is cowork ... But that's billed separately on a token basis and cost really adds up." Another uses "Opus in M365 Copilot rather than paying for my own Claude/ChatGPT". A third calls Copilot in 365 "critically underpowered" for long-context knowledge work: it "flakes hard when the window gets long".
Skeptical: "so a long way of saying: we need to fund our AI"; "We've lost customers over the increased price." Others note it still helps in specific cases, for example "pretty good about taking powerpoints and turning them into HTML".
Free, then a consumer ladder from $9.99 to $99.99, then work plans from $18 to $30 per user, plus metered agents.

You describe the outcome; Cowork builds a plan, works across your apps and files, and shows its progress.
Microsoft announced Cowork on Mar 9 and says it brought "the technology platform that powers Claude Cowork" into Microsoft 365 Copilot, built in close collaboration with Anthropic. Per Microsoft's Mar 30 post: you describe the outcome you want, Copilot Cowork creates a plan, reasons across your tools and files, and carries the work forward with visible progress and chances to steer, with built-in skills from Claude and Microsoft such as calendar management and daily briefings. On Microsoft's Jul 29 earnings call it said Cowork became generally available in the preceding month, "helping customers complete multi-step tasks grounded in their work data". Microsoft's consumer transparency note says Cowork can create documents, draft and send email, schedule meetings and manage files, and that "you review and approve sensitive actions before it happens".
| Mode (Microsoft's description) | What it does | Availability per Microsoft, Sept 25 |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Instant, conversational answers grounded in your work | Generally available |
| Cowork | Delegated multi-step tasks, returns a finished result | Generally available (said on Jul 29) |
| Code | Builds small apps, trackers, dashboards and automations in a sandbox | Frontier first; Premium and Pro preview later this year |
| Autopilot | Persistent agent with own identity, memory and computer | Private preview (expanding end of September) |
| Researcher | Cited, multi-source research; Critique uses OpenAI and Anthropic models to draft and review | In M365 Copilot; Premium/Pro for individuals |
- A Hacker News user with preview access says Cowork "is great to spar with" and handles recurring tasks.
- Microsoft's governance story (permissions, labels, audit) applies to work data.
- Model choice, including Anthropic models, is documented by Microsoft itself.
- The same HN user says Cowork is billed on a token basis on top of the licence and "cost really adds up"; I could not confirm the rate on a Microsoft page.
- Microsoft's satisfaction and engagement claims have no absolute numbers.
- Researchers found sandbox-escape bugs in Cowork (see Security).
Ask or delegate inside your own files and permissions, then approve the actions that matter.
Two workflow details from Microsoft's documents: Copilot's "Auto" setting weighs accuracy, speed and cost to choose a model and effort for each request, and Microsoft says it will eventually route work across Chat, Cowork and Code for you. The practical point is that you have less visible control over which model answered, so if the model matters to you, pick it manually where the app allows.
Agents that build small tools for you and agents that keep working while you sleep.
Autopilot lives in your tenant with its own identity, memory, computer and workspace; you give it a name, a role and a goal and @mention it in Teams or Outlook like a colleague, with "permissions, audit and governance behind it". On the earnings call Microsoft described the Autopilots as "autonomous, long-running agents", including an always-on personal agent powered by OpenClaw. Code builds persistent desktop widgets, interactive dashboards and cloud-hosted internal apps, and runs in a sandbox hosted in your tenant through a new Copilot Managed Runtime (in preview). Agent 365 is the control plane for governing agents; Microsoft says nearly 40 million agents are registered across tens of thousands of companies.
| Agent product | Stage (Microsoft, Sept 25) | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Autopilot (formerly Scout) | Private preview | Persistent, cloud-hosted, own identity; set objective and boundaries |
| Code | Frontier, then broader | Powered by the same technology as GitHub Copilot; sandboxed |
| Copilot Managed Runtime | Preview | Hosts apps built in Cowork, Code and Copilot Studio inside your tenant |
| Agent 365 | GA since May 1 ($15/user) | Observe, govern and secure agents |
| Agent Builder / Copilot Studio | Available | Natural-language agent building, extend with Studio |
- Recurring, context-heavy work already in Microsoft apps: briefings, supplier reviews, report prep.
- IT-governed building for people who are not developers.
- I have not used Autopilot or Code; both are early-access, so details will change.
- An always-on agent with tenant access is a larger attack surface than chat; see the Security section.
Multi-model by design: OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft's own MAI family.
Microsoft's Mar 9 post says Copilot "leverages leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic", with Claude in mainline chat through Frontier, and Microsoft's Sept 25 Code rendering shows a GPT-6 Astra option in its model picker. In parallel, Microsoft AI announced a family of seven in-house MAI models on Jun 2, including MAI-Thinking-1 (a reasoning model it says matches leading models on key software-engineering benchmarks and is preferred to Sonnet 4.6 in its own blind tests) and MAI-Code-1-Flash, aimed at GitHub Copilot. Those are Microsoft's claims. For the other big assistants, see the Claude review and the ChatGPT review; for connectors, the Claude MCP and connectors guide explains the protocol many agent tools share.

Strong enterprise commitments, but researchers keep finding ways around Copilot's guardrails.
| Control | What Microsoft says |
|---|---|
| Work data and training | "Prompts, responses, and data accessed through Microsoft Graph aren't used to train foundation models" (Learn: enterprise data protection) |
| Work data protection | Covered by the Data Protection Addendum with Microsoft as processor; encryption at rest and in transit; tenant isolation; GDPR and EU Data Boundary commitments |
| Permissions | Copilot respects your identity model and permissions, inherits sensitivity labels, applies retention policies and supports audit |
| Consumer conversations (older app version) | Saved 18 months by default; you can opt out of model training and personalisation and delete history |
| Consumer, new app (Aug 18) | Microsoft points to a separate "your data, privacy, and responsible AI" page; I did not read its training terms in full |
| Copilot Vision images | All images deleted within 30 days after the conversation ends (transparency note) |
| Cowork actions | You review and approve sensitive actions before they happen |
The less comfortable part. Security researchers have repeatedly shown Copilot being steered into leaking data. Johann Rehberger's "Copirate 365" research, presented at DEF CON Singapore, covered chains against M365 Copilot and the consumer Copilot (memory poisoning, data exfiltration through HTML previews) and received CVE-2026-24299; he writes that the issues are patched. PromptArmor reported in September that a malicious Skill could escape Copilot Cowork's sandbox by hijacking its AI gateway to spawn agents in Anthropic's cloud and exfiltrate files with no human approval; it says it disclosed this on July 14 and Microsoft remediated it by Sept 2. PromptArmor also published an earlier Cowork sandbox-bypass report in August. These are third-party write-ups, not Microsoft statements, and I did not test any of them. The takeaway: do not install Skills or plugins from the internet into a Copilot that can see your files, and keep sensitive material out of agents until your security team has reviewed them.
Best for people and teams already inside Microsoft 365; weaker if you want a standalone best-model chatbot.
| Situation | Why Copilot fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Student or casual user | Free chat, voice, vision and images | Free |
| Home user who lives in Word, Excel and Outlook | Copilot inside the apps you already use | Personal / Family, then Premium |
| Power user who needs agent features | Researcher, Analyst, Code preview | Premium; Pro if limits bite |
| Small business on Microsoft 365 | Bundled Copilot and security, per-seat pricing | Business Standard/Premium with Copilot |
| Enterprise with governance needs | DPA terms, Purview, Agent 365, Cowork and Autopilot | M365 Copilot or E7, after a pilot |
| Someone who wants cited research above all | Researcher exists, but compare Perplexity first | Free to test |
Six real gaps, not manufactured ones.
Microsoft 365 Copilot became "Microsoft Copilot", Copilot Pro was replaced by Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro, Scout became Autopilot, and the app was relaunched on Aug 18. Pricing pages and docs still mix old and new names.
Home and Code are in the Frontier program, Autopilot is in private preview, and Code reaches Premium and Pro only "later this year". Most readers cannot use what Microsoft is advertising.
Per-seat licences, metered agents, and (per a Hacker News user) token-style billing for Cowork; Trustpilot reviewers complain about credits burning fast. Hacker News commenters also say 2026 Microsoft 365 price changes pushed some products up by as much as 42% (press-reported; I did not check Microsoft's notice).
Trustpilot reviewers describe confident wrong answers, daily message limits, and a reviewer who says their chat history was deleted. One HN user says Copilot in 365 struggles on long context.
Copirate 365 (CVE-2026-24299) and two PromptArmor Cowork sandbox bypasses in 2026. Patched, per the researchers, but agents with broad access raise the stakes.
Microsoft's pricing pages told me products were "not available in your market" for my region, features vary by country and device, and AI in Personal and Family is for the subscription owner only.
Copilot is the Microsoft-native one. Others win on model quality, citations or independence.

Questions people are actually searching right now
Is Microsoft Copilot free?
Yes. The Copilot app and copilot.microsoft.com are free, with lower usage limits than paid plans. Copilot Chat is also included at no extra cost for Entra account users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription.
How much does Microsoft Copilot cost?
In the US, Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 per month, Family $12.99, Premium $19.99 and Pro $99.99. For work, Business Standard with Copilot is $23.50 per user per month (paid yearly), the Copilot Business add-on is $18 promotional ($21 list), and Microsoft 365 Copilot is $30. Check Microsoft's pricing pages for your country.
What happened to Copilot Pro and Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Microsoft's documentation says Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot. Press reports say the standalone Copilot Pro plan was retired in favour of Microsoft 365 Premium; Microsoft's pricing page lists Premium and Pro as the individual AI tiers.
What are Cowork, Code and Autopilot?
Cowork runs delegated multi-step tasks; Code builds small apps and dashboards in a sandbox; Autopilot is a persistent always-on agent. Cowork is generally available, Code starts in Frontier, and Autopilot is in private preview, per Microsoft's Sept 25 post.
Which AI models does Copilot use?
Microsoft says Copilot uses leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic, with Claude available in chat through Frontier, plus Microsoft's own MAI models in other products. An Auto setting picks a model per request.
Does Copilot use my data to train its models?
For work accounts, Microsoft says prompts, responses and Graph data are not used to train foundation models. For personal accounts, the older app's FAQ says you can opt out of training, and conversations are stored for 18 months by default; the new app has its own page that I did not read in full.
Is Microsoft Copilot safe?
Microsoft publishes strong enterprise commitments, and independent researchers have found and reported flaws (Copirate 365, Cowork sandbox bypasses) that were patched according to the researchers. Avoid installing unreviewed Skills or plugins and keep sensitive data out of early-access agents.
What are the best alternatives?
ChatGPT for breadth, Claude for writing and code, Gemini for Google Workspace, Perplexity for citations. See Alternatives above.
