Murf AI Review 2026: The Voiceover Studio That Turned Into a Voice-Agent API Company, and What It Costs Now
Correction, Oct 4, 2026: an earlier version said Murf won 34 of 42 language matchups. That count treats the 50% English tie against OpenAI as a win; strictly, Murf's own table shows 33 wins, 1 tie and 8 losses.
Murf used to be the simple answer to "I need a voiceover without hiring a narrator." In October 2026 its homepage leads with voice agents and the Falcon 2 text-to-speech API (launched June 16, 2026), while the Studio app still sells from $19 a month billed annually ($29 monthly). This review checks Murf's own pricing page, API docs and changelog on Oct 3, 2026, then tests Murf's loudest claims against the independent Artificial Analysis leaderboard, where Falcon 2 sits at rank 20, not first. It also reads what users say on Trustpilot and Hacker News, and is blunt about cloning being Enterprise-only and the billing complaints.

| Ownership | Independent VC-backed; $10M Series A (Sep 2022) led by Matrix Partners India with Elevation Capital |
| Free tier | Real but small: Studio 10 minutes, no downloads, no commercial rights; API $10 free credit a month |
| Cheapest paid plan | $19/mo Studio Creator billed annually ($29 monthly) |
| API entry | $0.01 per 1,000 characters Falcon 2, pay as you go |
| Trustpilot record | 4.6/5 as displayed, 186 reviews |
Murf is a solid, controllable voiceover tool and a very cheap real-time API, but it is not the independent quality leader its own marketing implies.
"If you make training videos, explainers or slide narration and want fine control over pronunciation and pace, Murf Studio is easy to justify. If you are choosing a voice for a product or an agent, test it against two or three rivals with your own script before you believe any leaderboard, Murf's included."
My honest read: Murf now runs two businesses under one logo. Studio is the original product, a web editor where you pick a voice, type or paste a script, tune pronunciation and emphasis, and export audio. The API and agents side is where the company is putting its energy in 2026: Falcon 2 for streaming speech at $0.01 per 1,000 characters, an on-premise option, and a voice-agent offer with no public price. The pricing is clearer than most rivals', and the compliance paper is real. Against that, the independent Artificial Analysis arena ranks Falcon 2 at 20th and Murf's older Gen2 API model near the bottom of the table, custom voice cloning is Enterprise-only, and Trustpilot carries a steady stream of billing and cancellation complaints. This is a VERIFIED EDITORIAL REVIEW: Murf's pricing page, docs, changelog, security pages and GitHub repos were checked on Oct 3, 2026, alongside Trustpilot and Hacker News. I did not run a controlled hands-on test of Studio.
One company, four surfaces: a voiceover Studio, a speech API, voice agents and a dubbing tool.
Murf's own description is "The Complete AI Voice Platform": it "helps developers, creators, and enterprises build production-grade voice agents and studio-quality content on proprietary speech models and infrastructure." In practice you meet it in four places. Murf Studio is the editor for voiceovers with 200+ voices, a pronunciation library, and Canva, PowerPoint and Google Slides integrations. The Murf API offers two text-to-speech models: Falcon 2, a streaming model for conversational use, and Gen2, the customization-first model. Murf Agents are hosted voice agents for calls and chat, sold through sales. Murf Dub translates and re-voices video, billed in credits.

Ownership: Murf is an independent, venture-funded company. Its September 2022 announcement says it raised a $10M Series A led by Matrix Partners India with existing investor Elevation Capital. I found no acquisition and no later funding figure on Murf's own pages, so none is cited. The footer address on murf.ai now reads San Francisco, while the older pricing page still shows Salt Lake City, so I do not treat "headquarters" as settled.
Widely used by corporate training and content teams, with self-reported numbers that do not agree with each other.
The homepage says 10 million plus, the About page says 6 million plus unique users. Neither defines active, free or paid. Not customers.
Homepage claim, Oct 3, 2026. Counts companies using Murf in some form, not seats or spend.
Quoted on murf.ai. I could not open G2, so this is the vendor's statement, not my reading.
Artificial Analysis Provider Voice leaderboard, Oct 3, 2026: Elo 1155 (+/-14). A preference score, not market share.

What I weigh most is the pivot. A company that built its name on Canva-friendly voiceover for explainer videos now ships on-premise TTS containers and names "Agents" in the top menu. Murf's own migration page even invites developers from Play.ai, which it says went through a "service disruption" after acquisition by Meta. That is a real market opening, and it is also a reminder that voice vendors change quickly.
Voice quality and ease of use get praise. Billing, cancellation and Studio lag get the angry reviews.
Early reactions were split. One commenter said the many options "are attractive" but that it "does not seem able to adjust the pauses and intonation to indicate emphasis and contrast the way a skilled human narrator does". Another wrote "Murf's marketing page has better results than their product". A third said "you can get similar-quality voices for much cheaper from Azure, Google, AWS and IBM Watson" via API. In Sep 2026 a developer building a Korean learning app wrote that for voicing sentences "I use murf.ai, which seemed very nice for korean." The 2023 thread predates Falcon 2, so it is history, not a current verdict.
Praise in 2026 reviews centres on natural voices, easy editing and accent variety ("Super cool, easy sounded great, the editing is nice", Mar 2026). Complaints centre on money: "The voices sound great, but the high prices and automatic credit card charges feel like a total gotcha" (Feb 2026), a Sep 2026 one-star saying cancellations are not honoured, and older reviews about charges after cancelling and lost banked hours. A couple of reviewers describe the Studio interface as laggy or hard to navigate. Trustpilot skews toward people with a billing problem, so read the split, not the headline.
Murf shows G2 customer quotes from training managers and learning specialists, for example that it lets a user "create TTS voiceovers in a matter of minutes" and that clients were surprised the voices were not from professional voice-over actors. These are hand-picked by the vendor and tell you who the happy user is: an L&D or small-business content producer who wants speed, not a studio-grade audio engineer.
Studio is a subscription by the year. The API is pay as you go. Dubbing is credits.

| Creator, billed monthly | $29 x 12 = $348 / 24 hrs = $14.50 per hour |
| Business, billed annually / monthly | $792 / 96 hrs = $8.25 per hour; $1,188 / 96 = $12.38 per hour |
| Murf's "Saved 33%" claim | Creator 19 vs 29 is 34.5% off; Business 66 vs 99 is 33.3% off |
| API free credit in Falcon 2 characters | $10 / ($0.01 per 1,000 chars) = 1,000,000 characters; about 333,000 on Gen2 |
| Dubbing a 10-minute video into 3 languages | 10 x 3 x 2 = 60 credits x $0.25 = $15 on pay as you go |
One conflict to know about: the pricing page says the API free trial gives "$10 FREE, every month", while the API FAQ in the docs still says the free plan lasts "until you exhaust the 100,000 character credits" with no time limit. I trust the pricing page for the current offer and the docs for the older one; confirm before you build around either.
Decide by what you are making and who has to sign the contract.
Studio Creator at $19 a month billed annually. Try the free tier first, but remember it does not let you download.
Business at $66 a month billed annually. Emphasis, Variability and Say It My Way are not on Creator.
API pay as you go, Falcon 2 at $0.01 per 1,000 characters. Test it against alternatives with your own script first.
Both instant and professional cloning are Enterprise only. If you need self-serve cloning, compare other vendors.
Dub: 100 free credits, then $0.25 a credit. Remember it is 2 credits per minute per language.
Enterprise. Murf lists data residency for Falcon 2 streaming and an on-premise container option.
Murf's real strength is control over how a voice reads. Its speed claims are strong, and its quality claims need an outside check.
On Studio, Murf's pitch is control: you can adjust pitch, speed and pauses, define custom pronunciations, pick from "15+ expressive styles" on a voice, and (on Business) add emphasis and variability. The homepage promises "Complete Control Over Pitch, Speed and Intonation" and a "Custom Pronunciation Library". On the API, Murf says Falcon 2 is built for "real-time conversations" with "sub-100ms time-to-first-audio", multilingual code-mixing in one sentence, and support for 10,000 concurrent calls on Enterprise. Docs list 150+ voices in 35 languages on the API and 200+ on Studio.

On speed, the evidence is Murf's own, and it is specific: a region-by-region table with competitors named. I read it as credible but vendor-run, and the numbers describe time to first audio over the public internet from specific test locations, not what your app will see. Quality is where I would slow down.

| Model (as listed by Artificial Analysis) | Rank | Elo | AA-listed price per 1M characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eleven v4 (ElevenLabs) | 1 | 1321 | $80.0 |
| Simba 3.2 (Speechify) | 7 | 1242 | $6.6 |
| Falcon 2 (Murf) | 20 | 1155 | $10.0 |
| Turbo v2.5 (ElevenLabs) | 37 | 1098 | $50.0 |
| Flash v2.5 (ElevenLabs) | 46 | 1078 | $50.0 |
| Murf Speech Gen 2 | 77 | 984 | $100.0 |
Here is why I raise it. Murf's statement, "Falcon 2 ranks above ElevenLabs Flash v2.5 and Turbo v2.5, OpenAI Realtime and xAI TTS on naturalness", is true on today's list (1155 against 1098, 1078, 1077 and 1136). It is also a carefully chosen set of comparisons. On the same table, 19 models rank above Falcon 2, including newer ElevenLabs, Cartesia, Google, Alibaba, Inworld and Speechify models. The 20th rank is respectable for a model priced at $10 per million characters, and it is cheaper than most of the models above it. It is not "the most natural". Murf's older Gen2 API model sits at 77th.

| Murf win rate (Murf's own table) | vs AWS | vs ElevenLabs | vs Google | vs Azure | vs OpenAI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| English (US, UK, AU, IN) | 68% | 60% | 78% | 71% | 50% |
| German | 14% | 66% | 26% | 76% | 84% |
| Hindi | 92% | 40% | 100% | 45% | 98% |
| Italian | 100% | 35% | 73% | 94% | 98% |
| Mandarin | 84% | 94% | 86% | 20% | 89% |
| Bengali | N/A | N/A | 46% | 35% | 96% |
- Clear control over pronunciation, pace and style in Studio.
- Falcon 2 pricing at $0.01 per 1,000 characters is low and public.
- Murf publishes its own per-language losses, which most vendors do not.
- Vendor benchmarks pick the competitor versions; run your own script through two or three vendors.
- Languages are not equal: Murf's own table has weak matchups in German, Hindi, Italian and Mandarin.
- Studio may use different models than the API; I could not confirm which model each Studio voice uses.
Write the script, assign voices, fix the words it gets wrong, then export or hand it to a pipeline.
The review step is the one that matters. A Hacker News commenter in 2023 noted that synthetic speech struggles with emphasis and contrast, and Murf's answer is the Emphasis and Variability controls, which sit on the $66 Business plan rather than the $19 Creator plan. If your narration is conversational or emotional, budget for the higher plan or for a lot of re-listening.

Agents are Murf's growth bet, and also where the price disappears behind "contact sales".
Murf's agents page promises AI agents that "handle outbound and inbound calls", with a stated response latency under 800 ms, "40% reduction in cost-to-serve" and "30% increase in CSAT" in marketing copy, plus function calling, CRM integration and custom retrieval. The page discloses no price or concurrency limit. I treat the percentages as vendor claims with no method behind them. Dubbing is more concrete: Murf says it localizes video while preserving voice and tone, with "expert linguistic review" on the Enterprise tier, and the pricing page gives clear credit math.
| Product | How you buy it | What is public | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Murf Agents | Contact sales or book a demo | Capabilities, claimed latency under 800 ms, compliance list | No price, no stated concurrency; claims are Murf's own |
| Falcon 2 API for your own agent | Pay as you go, $0.01 per 1,000 characters | Docs, rate limits, WebSocket and HTTP streaming | Free and pay-as-you-go concurrency is 5 for US-East and 2 for global and regional endpoints |
| Murf Dub (app) | Free 100 credits, then $0.25 per credit | 2 credits per minute per language | Language counts differ across Murf pages (10+, 25+ and 40+ are all stated) |
| Dub API | Same credit system via API | Jobs, webhooks, languages endpoints in docs | QA-assured dubbing is an Enterprise feature |
| Enterprise voice cloning | Sales-led | Instant clone from one sample up to 30 seconds; pro clone from up to 90 minutes, 1 to 4 weeks | Not self-serve; endpoints return 403 until enabled for your workspace |

Presentation tools for creators, and agent frameworks, Zapier-style tools and an MCP server for developers.
For creators, Murf lists a Canva add-on, a PowerPoint plugin and Google Slides voiceover, plus Adobe Captivate, Adobe Audition and Articulate 360 integrations. For developers, its docs list Pipecat, LiveKit and Agora for voice agents, and Zapier, Make and n8n for automation. There is also an official Murf MCP server, so a client such as Claude Desktop can generate speech; setup is a uvx setup-murf-mcp-claude command or a manual config. If MCP is new to you, JAVIS's Claude MCP and Connectors guide explains the idea, and the n8n review covers the automation tool Murf documents.
| Integration | What it does | Status as read |
|---|---|---|
| Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides | Add voiceovers to designs and decks | Listed on pricing and integrations pages; PowerPoint and Slides need Business |
| Adobe Captivate, Audition, Articulate 360 | Murf voices inside e-learning and audio tools | Listed in Murf's developer docs |
| Pipecat, LiveKit, Agora | Murf TTS inside real-time voice-agent stacks | Documented pages in docs |
| Zapier, Make, n8n | No-code and low-code automation with Murf API | Documented pages in docs |
| Murf MCP server (murf-ai/murf-mcp) | Speech generation from MCP clients such as Claude Desktop | MIT licence, 12 GitHub stars, last push Aug 20, 2026 |

The API is cheap per character. The traps are concurrency, character limits and the model you pick.
| What you are doing | What you pay / hit |
|---|---|
| Prototype with Falcon 2 | $10 free credit a month on the API free trial = about 1,000,000 characters (JAVIS arithmetic from $0.01 per 1,000) |
| Production agent on Falcon 2 | $0.01 per 1,000 characters, pay as you go; Murf says this equals 1 cent per minute, implying roughly 1,000 characters per spoken minute |
| Studio-quality batch narration via API on Gen2 | $0.03 per 1,000 characters, three times Falcon 2 on the price list |
| Long text | Docs say up to 3,000 characters per request; split longer text |
| Concurrency on free and pay as you go | Falcon 2: 5 for US-East, 2 for global and regional endpoints; Gen2: 5; Enterprise up to 10,000 concurrent calls |
| Voice changer or translation | $0.10 per minute of audio; $0.02 per 1,000 characters |
| Compare with the AA table | AA lists Falcon 2 at $10.0 per 1M characters, Simba 3.2 at $6.6, Eleven v4 at $80.0 (price list, not total cost of ownership) |
Real certifications and deployment options, but the "no training on your data" promise is an Enterprise line item.
| Control | What Murf says |
|---|---|
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA listed on the pricing page; CCPA noted in docs (vendor statements, reports not read) |
| Hosting | AWS; compute clusters replicated across three availability zones in US-East-2 (Ohio), per Murf's security page; ML models run in a VPC |
| Data residency | Isolated regional environments for Falcon 2 streaming and WebSocket TTS for Enterprise ("10+ regions" on the site, 11 in the Nov 2025 changelog) |
| On-premise | Falcon 2 in your own data center or VPC via a Local License Agent and TTS server; contact sales |
| Training on your data | Ethical AI page: Murf does not use customer data to train its AI models "for our Enterprise customers"; the Enterprise plan lists "No Training on your Data". The pages I read are silent about other plans |
| Retention | Privacy policy: account data deleted within 30 days of termination; security page: up to 90 days grace to retrieve generated audio for contracted customers |
| Voice sourcing | Voices said to be created with permission from professional voice actors who earn royalties each time their voices are used (homepage) |
Best for content and learning teams that want controllable voiceover, and for developers who want a cheap streaming voice.
| Situation | Why Murf fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance creator doing a few narrated videos a month | Fast voices, commercial rights, Canva | Creator |
| L&D or e-learning team | Pronunciation library, PowerPoint and Captivate, Business licence | Business |
| Developer building a voice agent | Falcon 2 at $0.01 per 1,000 characters, streaming, MCP and agent-framework docs | API pay as you go |
| Company localizing training video | Dub credits and Enterprise QA | Dub, then Enterprise |
| Brand wanting its own cloned voice | Instant and professional cloning exist but only via sales | Enterprise |
| Someone who needs the single most natural voice available | Independent ranking puts Falcon 2 at 20th, not first | Compare ElevenLabs and others first |
| Anyone who wants a self-serve cancel-anytime experience | Trustpilot shows repeated cancellation and refund complaints | Read the terms; prefer monthly while testing |
Six real gaps, not manufactured ones.
Murf's chart beats older ElevenLabs models. On Artificial Analysis today, Falcon 2 is 20th and Gen2 is 77th. Murf's own table also shows losing language matchups.
Both instant and professional cloning require a sales-enabled workspace. Creator and Business users cannot clone a voice themselves.
Trustpilot reviews cite charges after cancelling and lost banked hours. A sample of billing complaints is not the whole picture, but the pattern is consistent across years.
Creator is 24 hours a year and has no Emphasis or Variability. Free has no downloads. Business is still one editor seat.
10M versus 6M users, API free credit ($10 monthly versus 100,000 characters), and dubbing in 10+, 25+ or 40+ languages. Always verify the page you are buying from.
Falcon 2 launched Jun 16, 2026, Gen2 streaming was deprecated Aug 16, 2026, and a field was renamed in Mar 2026. Pin model versions and read the changelog.
Murf is best when you want controllable voiceover and a cheap API. Others win on naturalness, editing or video.
| If you mostly need... | Compare Murf with... |
|---|---|
| The highest-ranked naturalness and a large voice library | ElevenLabs review (Eleven v4 is rank 1 on the AA list at $80 per 1M characters) |
| To edit audio and video by editing text | Descript review |
| A talking presenter on screen, not just a voice | Synthesia review or HeyGen review |
| Low per-character API price | Speechify's Simba 3.2 is listed at $6.6 per 1M characters on AA, cheaper than Falcon 2's $10 |
| Automation around voice output | n8n review and Claude MCP and Connectors guide |
| Entry point (verified Oct 3, 2026) | Murf Studio | Murf API | Murf Dub |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 10 min, no downloads | $10 credit a month | 100 credits |
| Cheapest paid | $19/mo billed annually ($29 monthly) | $0.01 per 1,000 chars (Falcon 2) | $0.25 per credit |
| Unit that runs out | Voice generation hours per year | Credits (never expire when purchased) | Credits (2 per minute per language) |
| Cloning | Enterprise add-on | Enterprise only | Not stated |

Questions people are actually searching right now
Is Murf AI free?
Yes, in small ways. Studio Free gives 10 projects and 10 minutes of voice generation with no downloads and no commercial rights. The API gives $10 of free credit each month per the pricing page, and the Dub tool gives 100 free credits. Verified on murf.ai/pricing, Oct 3, 2026.
How much does Murf AI cost in October 2026?
Studio Creator is $19 a month billed annually ($228) or $29 monthly; Business is $66 a month billed annually ($792) or $99 monthly; Enterprise is custom. The API starts at $0.01 per 1,000 characters for Falcon 2 and $0.03 for Gen2. Dub starts at $0.25 per credit.
Is Murf AI better than ElevenLabs?
Not on the independent list I checked. Artificial Analysis ranks ElevenLabs Eleven v4 first and Murf Falcon 2 twentieth by crowd preference, though Falcon 2 is cheaper per character. Studio controls and pricing may suit your project better, so test your own script.
Can I clone my voice with Murf?
Only through Enterprise. Murf's docs say Instant Voice Cloning is available on the Enterprise plan only, and professional cloning is sales-led as well.
What is Murf Falcon 2?
Murf's streaming text-to-speech model for conversational use, launched Jun 16, 2026. Murf claims sub-100 ms time to first audio and lists it at $0.01 per 1,000 characters. Murf's legacy Gen2 streaming model was deprecated on Aug 16, 2026.
Does Murf train on my data?
Murf says it does not use customer data to train its AI models for Enterprise customers. The pages I read do not state the position for Creator or Business, so ask Murf before pasting confidential material.
Is Murf safe to subscribe to?
The company lists the certifications above (stated, not audited here), but Trustpilot has repeated complaints about charges after cancellation. Prefer monthly billing while testing, and keep your cancellation confirmation.
What are the best Murf alternatives?
ElevenLabs for ranking and library, Descript for text-based editing, Synthesia or HeyGen for presenter video, and Speechify for a lower per-character API price. See Alternatives above.
