Deel Review 2026: What It Really Costs to Hire Abroad, and When It Is Worth It
Deel lets a company hire and pay people abroad without opening a local entity: contractors from $49 a month each, full employees through its Employer of Record (EOR) service from $599 a month each. The list price is only part of the bill. This review sets Deel's October 2026 pricing against the deposits and fees in its own help center, what workers and buyers say, and what Remote, Oyster and Rippling charge, plus a short guide to hiring remote developers for an AI startup.

| Made by | Deel (founded 2019) |
| What it is | EOR, contractor payments, global payroll, HR, IT and visas in one platform |
| Contractors | $49/contractor/mo; Contractor of Record $325 |
| Employees abroad | $599/employee/mo (EOR), plus a deposit |
| Free tier | None for hiring; Deel AI is included with every product |
Deel is the safe default for hiring across borders. Budget for the deposit, and do not pay EOR prices for people who are genuinely contractors.
"If you need a real employee in a country where you have no entity, Deel's $599 EOR list price undercuts Remote and Oyster's published $699. If you are mostly paying freelancers, Deel's $49 per contractor costs more than the $29 rivals charge, so the case for Deel rests on everything else in the platform."
Here is how I read it. Deel is no longer one product: its pricing page runs across five tabs and sells recruiting, HR software, payroll, a US PEO and laptops alongside the two things most startups come for, paying contractors and employing people abroad. That core is still strong. Deel says it owns entities and its payroll engine in 130+ countries, its help center documents nearly every fee in plain language, and its HR and compliance assistant, Deel AI, is included free.
The friction is in cash flow and at the edges. An EOR hire needs a refundable deposit of 1 to 1.5 months of everything you will be invoiced, plus severance accruals in about 60 countries, and invoices land on the 23rd with five-day terms. Workers' most common complaint in late 2026 Trustpilot reviews is funds held during manual verification. And Rippling's espionage lawsuit against Deel, which Deel denies, was still running in 2026.
Not a hands-on test: JAVIS did not run payroll or hire anyone through Deel for this review. It is built from Deel's pricing page, help center and developer documentation, competitors' public pricing pages, and public user reviews, all as of Oct 4, 2026.
One account, five buying decisions: hire, manage, pay, equip, or bundle.
Deel describes itself as "one platform for payroll, HR, benefits, mobility, performance and device management across 150 countries." For a startup, the map below is the useful version: which product solves which hiring problem, and what each one costs per person per month.
The biggest name in its category by its own numbers, still private, and still in a very public fight with Rippling.
Deel's "About Deel" press page (deel.com/press), Oct 4, 2026. Self-reported; Deel is private, so there are no audited filings.
Per deel.com/press. A private-market valuation, not a share price. (Deel's /about page uses "$17.3B" for processed payments, a different figure.)
Deel's pages differ: 40,000+ on the press page and pricing, 35,000+ on its demo landing page and a site summary. Customers are companies, not workers.

Deel's country count depends on which of its own pages you read, and it matters because the number you care about is "can I employ someone there", not "can I pay someone there."

Buyers mostly like it. Workers love the payouts until a verification hold freezes their money.
Trustpilot, Oct 4, 2026. Most recent reviews are marked "Invited," and most reviewers are workers paid through Deel, not buyers; Deel replied to 100% of negative reviews. Deel's own EOR page shows "4.8/5 based on 15,050 reviews," which is Deel's figure, reported separately.
Two years paying contractors through Deel: "Very good experience overall. Always responsive customer service." The one gap: they could not hire a contractor in Venezuela through the platform.
On the employer side, "any exceptions to the rigid workflow" broke the process; this commenter called support helpless and said UI bugs persisted for years.
A contractor found Deel "much more convenient" than their employer's old setup: payouts split by percentage across several bank accounts, European transfers arriving almost instantly.

Deel's fee is what it says. The cash you put up and the pass-through costs are the part people miss.
Deel's FAQ promises "no surprise fees," and that is fair for Deel's own fee. It does not cover deposits, statutory accruals, payment processing, currency conversion or late fees. Every line below comes from Deel's help center or its pricing-page terms.
| Cost | What Deel's help center says | When it bites |
|---|---|---|
| EOR deposit | Standard deposit is 1 to 1.5 times all monthly charges: salary, employer costs, fixed allowances and management fees. Higher in some countries. | Before the hire starts; refunded within 60 days after termination and final invoices are paid |
| Bigger deposits for custom terms | Two months to remove probation, to offer PTO more than 8 days above the legal minimum, or to transfer accrued benefits; one extra month for each month of notice beyond one | When you offer a generous package to win a senior engineer |
| Severance accrual | Monthly charge, separate from the deposit, in about 60 countries with statutory severance (Brazil, India, Germany, France, Mexico, Poland and the Philippines among them); surplus refunded on resignation | Every month, for the life of the contract |
| Contractor of Record deposit | One month of the contractor's payment plus a Deel fee | At signing |
| Dormant contractor fee | Up to $5 a month per contract that is active with no payments for two months in a row | When you forget to end a finished contract |
| Card funding | $0.30 + 2.9% (US/EU cards) or $0.30 + 3.9% (other cards); ACH, SEPA, BACS and wires $5 | Every time you fund invoices |
| Currency conversion | Deel applies a forward rate if you pay in a different currency from the invoice; pay in the invoice currency to avoid it | Paying a EUR or BRL invoice in USD |
| Late payment | EOR invoices issue on the 23rd with five-day terms. The seven-day grace period is not an extension: if payment misses it, 0.15% of the invoice is charged for every day from the original due date (USD 15 a day on USD 10,000), billed separately on the 1st of the next month | One missed month-end run |
| PEO promotion fine print | Three free months of platform fees require a two-year term; ending early means repaying full list price, including the credit | If you sign the PEO offer and leave early |
Decide by the kind of worker, the country, and how long you will keep them.
Contractor plan ($49). If you have more than a handful, compare Remote and Oyster at $29.
That pattern is what misclassification rules target. Use Contractor of Record ($325) or convert to EOR.
EOR ($599 plus deposit). This is Deel's strongest product and its lowest published EOR price against Remote and Oyster.
Price an entity plus Deel Global Payroll ($29) against EOR; the gap is $570 per person per month at list price.
Look at Deel US payroll, the PEO, or Rippling and Gusto. Deel's edge is cross-border.
Deel's 35-second explainer of the two contractor options, published Sep 23, 2025.
Deel becomes the legal employer in the hire's country; you keep the day-to-day relationship.
With EOR, the employee signs a local contract with Deel's entity, and Deel runs payroll, taxes, benefits and termination under local law while you direct the work. Deel's FAQ says an employee can be onboarded "in as little as one day" and that "any and all IP passes through to you the customer." For equity, the same FAQ says US companies can grant non-qualified stock options (NSOs) to EOR employees, which it calls the only viable option there because there is no direct employment relationship on paper.
| Task | Deel (as EOR) | You (the client) |
|---|---|---|
| Employment contract | Local contract on Deel's entity; IP passes to you | Approve role, salary, start date, extras |
| Payroll and tax | Runs payroll, files taxes; invoices on the 23rd | Fund two invoices (payroll in local currency, fees in USD) within five days |
| Benefits | Statutory benefits, plus optional benefits you choose | Decide what to offer above the legal minimum |
| Time off and expenses | Applies local holidays and policy rules | Approve requests; upload changes before the 20th |
| Termination | Notice, severance and final pay under local law | Start offboarding; settle the final invoice |
Deel's own three-minute overview of its EOR service, published Mar 19, 2026.
The short version: classify the role, price the full cost, verify identity, then pay.
Most AI startups hit the same moment: the best ML or full-stack engineer you interviewed lives where you have no company. Deel covers the path in one account, from sourcing in Deel Talent ($14 per worker per month) to contracts, onboarding and payouts. The decision that matters most comes first: is the role really a contractor or an employee, because that picks the $49, $325 or $599 plan. This is guidance, not legal advice; check classification and IP terms with counsel in the hire's country.
- Classify honestly. Full-time, only for you and managed day to day usually means EOR or Contractor of Record; scoped project work for someone with other clients fits the $49 contractor plan.
- Check the country. Deel lists 20 countries and regions where it is not available, including Russia, Iran and Belarus.
- Price the full cost before the offer. Run the Employee Cost Calculator or EOR vs Entity Calculator, then add the $599 fee, the deposit and any severance accrual.
- Lock down IP and equity. Deel says IP under its EOR contracts passes to you; read the IP clause in contractor contracts; plan equity as NSOs.
- Verify identity before granting repository and model access. Deel cites Gartner's projection that one in four candidate profiles will be fraudulent by 2028.
- Pay, then convert. Contractors withdraw through 15+ methods; core contractors can move to EOR in 110+ countries.

Deel AI answers questions about local employment rules, Deel workflows and your people data, in Deel and in Slack. Deel says it is "free and included with all Deel products," draws on a Knowledge Hub written by its experts, "uses OpenAI's LLM for general knowledge," and never shares your data "with any learning models." Use it as a fast first pass, then confirm anything that affects a contract.

| Contractor withdrawal method | Deel's fee | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Local bank transfer | $0 (provider fees may apply in some currencies) | $10 |
| Wise / Revolut / Deel Card | $0 | $5 |
| Same-currency cross-border transfer | $5 | $5 |
| SWIFT | $5, capped at $10 (intermediary banks may deduct more) | $100 |
| Payoneer / PayPal | 1% (min $12) / 2.5% (min $0.25) | $50 / $5 |
| Deel Instant Card Transfer | 0.75% (max $25) US banks; 2% (max $15) elsewhere | $5 |
| Crypto via Coinbase / digital currency transfer | 1.5% (USDC: $5 under $300, 1.6% above) / 2% + $1 | $5 to $20 |
For an AI startup, the interesting part: Deel exposes its platform to AI agents through an MCP server.
Deel has a REST API with webhooks for contracts, EOR, payroll, HRIS, accounting and devices, plus prebuilt integrations in its App Marketplace. More relevant to readers of this site, Deel's developer docs describe an official Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at https://api.letsdeel.com/mcp. Deel lists setup steps for Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop and ChatGPT, with OAuth2 recommended and personal access tokens as a fallback. Each tool maps to a Deel API operation.
| MCP tool group | Tools listed | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Contracts and hiring | 11 | listOfContracts, createContractForEOR, signContract |
| Hiring intelligence | 8 | calculateEmploymentCost, calculateEorVersusEntityHiringCosts, salary histograms by country |
| Payments and invoices | 13 | getInvoiceList, invoice adjustments |
| Time off and scheduling | 12 | createTimeOffRequest, entitlements |
| People and HRIS | 10 | getListOfPeople, searchUserByEmail |
| Org data, benefits, onboarding, IT, payroll | 32 | retrieveCountries, listItAssets, EOR payslips, immigration case details |
Builders are already wiring this up: on Hacker News in September 2026, one founder described an AI-written, real-time finance dashboard pulling from QuickBooks, Mercury, Stripe and Deel's APIs. If you already run Claude with connectors, our guide to Claude MCP connectors explains how remote MCP servers and permissions work. Deel's own best-practice page recommends OAuth2 over tokens, least-privilege scopes such as contracts:read only, and storing tokens in a secrets manager.
Deel's fees are predictable. Salary, employer costs and the deposit are what move the total.
| Illustrative team (list prices) | Deel fees per month | Deel fees per year | Cash held up front |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 freelance contractors | 3 × $49 = $147 | $1,764 | None on the standard plan |
| Same 3 on Remote or Oyster at $29 | $87 | $1,044 | None (Oyster: first 30 days free) |
| 1 EOR engineer, total monthly charges $8,000 | $599 | $7,188 | Deposit about $8,000 to $12,000 (1 to 1.5 ×) |
| Same EOR hire at Remote or Oyster list | $699 | $8,388 | Check each provider's deposit terms |
| 5 employees on your own entity + Deel Global Payroll | 5 × $29 = $145 | $1,740 | Entity setup and local costs (not Deel fees) |
The takeaway: Deel's $20 contractor premium has to be earned by breadth you will actually use, while its $100 EOR discount ($1,200 a year per employee) usually outweighs that premium once you have one or two full-time hires abroad.
Strong certifications on paper. The practical controls are approvals, scopes and where your deposit sits.
| Control | What Deel says |
|---|---|
| Certifications | SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports, ISO 27001, GDPR compliance (security page; reports via the Trust Center) |
| Encryption and hosting | AES-256 at rest; AWS-hosted, primary operations in Ireland, disaster recovery in France; 24/7 SIEM monitoring |
| Deel AI and your data | OpenAI's LLM for general knowledge; conversations and organization data "never shared with any learning models" |
| Client deposits | Held on Deel Inc.'s balance sheet in accounts with JP Morgan Chase (help center, Aug 2026) |
| Contract approvals | Per worker type: require approval before signing, and multiple signatories |
| MCP and API access | OAuth2 consent, scoped tokens, revocable access; Deel advises least privilege |
Best for small, remote-first teams hiring full-time people in several countries.
| Situation | Why Deel fits or not | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Seed-stage AI startup, first 2 to 10 hires across countries | Lowest published EOR list price of Deel, Remote and Oyster; one place for contractors too | EOR + Contractors |
| Agency or studio paying 30+ freelancers | Works well, but $49 each vs $29 at rivals is a real premium | Contractors (compare Remote, Oyster) |
| Company that already has entities in its main countries | Global Payroll at $29 keeps one system without EOR fees | Global Payroll, Deel HR |
| US-only team | Deel offers US payroll and a PEO, but its edge is cross-border | Compare US-focused payroll |
| Company sensitive to vendor litigation or reputational risk | Weigh the Rippling case and reported DOJ investigation | Have a second provider in mind |
Seven real drawbacks, each from a Deel page or a user report.
1 to 1.5 months of all charges per EOR hire, two months or more for generous terms, refunded only after the person leaves.
$49 per contractor against $29 at Remote and Oyster. At 20 contractors that is $4,800 a year.
130+ or 150+ countries for EOR on the same pricing page, 160+ in the help center; 35,000+ or 40,000+ customers; US PEO at $125 on one tab and $110 to $120 on another. Get a written quote.
Invoices on the 23rd with five-day terms; miss the seven-day grace period and 0.15% per day is charged back to the original due date. Ending an EOR contract needs 30 days' notice to Deel under its terms.
Recent one-star Trustpilot reviews describe funds held during manual checks and support loops.
Employers on Hacker News (2025) describe workflows that break on exceptions and Deel marketing to their workers directly.
Rippling's espionage suit and the reported DOJ investigation were unresolved in 2026. Deel denies wrongdoing.
Fees are documented in public help articles, there is no annual lock-in on core plans, and Deel AI costs nothing extra.
Deel wins on EOR price and breadth. Others win on contractor price or US-first HR.
| If you mostly need... | Compare Deel with... | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cheap contractor payments at volume | Remote, Oyster | $29 per contractor; Oyster's first 30 days free |
| Contractor indemnity without full COR | Remote Contractor Management Plus | $99 with coverage up to $100,000 per contractor for penalties |
| Annual EOR seats you can reuse | Oyster | Seat-based annual EOR billing at a reduced fee |
| One system for US HR, IT and global hiring | Rippling | Bundled platform; custom quote only |
| One or two contractors, nothing else | Direct contracts and a bank or payments app | No platform fee, but you own the paperwork and the classification risk |

Questions people actually ask before signing
How much does Deel cost in October 2026?
$49 per contractor, $325 per Contractor of Record and $599 per EOR employee per month (deel.com/pricing, Oct 4, 2026), month to month. Full list in Pricing.
Does Deel have hidden fees?
Deel's own fee is as listed. Budget separately for the EOR deposit (1 to 1.5 months of all monthly charges), severance accruals in about 60 countries, card and FX fees, and late fees; see the full list.
Is Deel cheaper than Remote?
For EOR, yes at list price: $599 against Remote's $699. For contractors, no: $49 against $29. Remote's Contractor of Record starts at $325, the same as Deel's.
How fast can I hire someone with Deel?
Deel says EOR employees can be onboarded in as little as one day, contractors in as little as two days, and Contractor of Record hires in up to five days once the master agreement is signed. Countries with payroll lead times can push the first pay date to the next cycle.
Can I give equity to an EOR employee?
Usually, yes, depending on the country. Deel's EOR FAQ says a US company can grant non-qualified stock options (NSOs) to EOR employees.
Can my AI agent use Deel?
Yes. Deel runs an official MCP server at api.letsdeel.com/mcp with 86 listed tools, and documents setup for Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT. Start with read-only scopes.
Is Deel safe given the Rippling lawsuit?
The lawsuit concerns alleged corporate espionage between the two companies, not customer funds or payroll. Deel denies wrongdoing. Customers who care about vendor risk should keep their own records exportable and know their exit path.
