Surfer Review 2026: What the Content Editor and AI Tracker Really Cost, From the 7-Day Trial to Yearly Document Limits, Now That Surfer Belongs to Positive
Surfer scores your article against the pages that rank on Google and, in one score since May 2026, against the facts AI answers tend to cite, then helps you write or fix it. It also sells an AI Tracker that watches how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features mention your brand. On surfer.ai/pricing as of Oct 26, 2026, Discovery costs $59 a month or $49 billed yearly, Standard $119 or $99, Pro $219 or $182 and Peace of Mind $359 or $299, with AI Search Analytics on its own from $95 or $82. The headline limits need a second look: the 360 documents shown on Standard and Pro are a yearly pool, which is 30 a month if you pay monthly. The 7-day Pro trial takes a card and converts by itself, prepaid yearly plans are not refundable under Surfer's Regulations, and when a plan expires your Content Editors and audits are deleted. Surfer has been owned by the French group Positive since Oct 28, 2025, and surferseo.com now redirects to surfer.ai.

| Made by | Surfer Sp. z o.o., Wrocław, Poland; part of the French group Positive since Oct 28, 2025 |
| What it is | A content editor that scores drafts for Google and AI answers, an AI article writer, content audits and an AI visibility tracker |
| Plans | Discovery $59; Standard $119; Pro $219; Peace of Mind $359 a month, or $49, $99, $182 and $299 billed yearly; AI Search Analytics from $95 or $82 |
| Limits | 120 or 360 documents a year (10 or 30 a month on monthly billing); Peace of Mind capped at 500 a month by fair use |
| Best for | Content teams that publish or refresh articles every week and also want to watch ChatGPT and Google AI answers |
Surfer pairs a mature scoring editor with an AI Tracker, but the plan limits are smaller than they first look and the exit terms are strict.
“The trial does not cancel automatically.”
That sentence from Surfer's own help center sums up the buying experience in 2026. Every Start for Free button on surfer.ai leads to a 7-day trial of the Pro plan, and you enter a card first. If you do nothing, the plan you picked at checkout begins and your card is charged. That is a normal model for software, but it is not the free plan the button suggests, and Surfer's help center adds that a cancelled trial ends with your account expiring and your stored data gone.
What you get for the money is broad. Every content plan includes the Content Editor, which compares your draft with the pages that rank for your keyword and with the facts AI answers tend to cite, and gives one Content Score with an SEO half and an AI Search half. Surfer AI writes a full draft inside that editor, Surfy rewrites passages, and Auto-Optimize applies the guidance in one click. From Standard up you also get the AI Tracker, which checks a set of prompts in AI engines and reports how often your brand is mentioned and which sources are cited. Pro adds the Topical Map, cannibalization reports and MCP access, so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can drive Surfer from a chat.
The weaker side is in the details. The document limits on the plan cards (120 on Discovery, 360 on Standard and Pro) are yearly pools: switch the page to monthly billing and they become 10 and 30 a month. Discovery has no AI tracking, no plagiarism check and no one-click optimization; Discovery and Standard have no data export. Prepaid yearly plans are not refundable unless Surfer accepts a request to recalculate the fee, and when any plan expires, Content Editors, audits and tracked sites are erased. Prices also moved: archived copies of the pricing page show the entry Essential plan at $99 a month in January 2026, while today's closest plan, Standard, costs $119.
One workspace for writing, auditing and tracking, sold in plans that set how many documents, prompts and seats you get.
Surfer is organized around brand workspaces. Inside a workspace you research topics, write or optimize documents in the Content Editor, audit pages you already have through a connected Google Search Console, and, on Standard and above, track prompts in AI engines. Your plan decides the pools: documents per year, AI prompts and their refresh rate, tracked pages, seats and integrations. Surfer, the company, is Surfer Sp. z o.o. in Wrocław, Poland, and since Oct 28, 2025 it is part of Positive, the French marketing software group formerly known as Sarbacane, which also owns User, Signitic and Iconosquare.

A new owner, a new plan line-up, a forced migration, a new score, MCP and a new domain, all within twelve months.
Surfer publishes no dated price announcement, but its help center, update posts and the Internet Archive's copies of the pricing page together give a clear sequence.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 28, 2025 | Positive announces it has acquired Surfer | Positive release |
| Jan 2, 2026 | Pricing page still sells Essential ($99 a month, $79 yearly), Scale ($219, $175) and Enterprise from $999 a month yearly | Internet Archive copy |
| Feb 13, 2026 | New line-up in place: Discovery, Standard, Pro, Peace of Mind | Internet Archive copy |
| May 4, 2026 | AI SEO Content Score: one score for Google and AI search | Surfer update post |
| May 18, 2026 | Legacy subscriptions migrated to current plans; coupons ended | Help center |
| May 25, 2026 | New Surfer API with full Content Editor control | Surfer update post |
| Aug 1, 2026 | AI Search Analytics shown as a standalone plan at $158 a month yearly for 100 prompts | Internet Archive copy |
| Sep 14, 2026 | AI Search Analytics entry tier at $82 a month yearly for 50 prompts | Internet Archive copy |
| Oct 5, 2026 | Surfer MCP out of beta for Pro, Peace of Mind and Enterprise | Surfer update post |
| Oct 16 to Oct 25, 2026 | Website moves from surferseo.com to surfer.ai | Internet Archive copies; redirect on Oct 26 |
The plan change is the one that touches every buyer. Comparing the January copy with today's page, the cheapest plan with WordPress and Google Docs integrations went from Essential at $99 a month ($79 yearly) to Standard at $119 ($99 yearly): $20 more per month on either billing, or 20.2% monthly and 25.3% yearly, which is $948 against $1,188 for a year. The plans are not identical, so treat this as the closest comparison rather than a like-for-like increase. The team plan held its monthly price: Scale was $219 and Pro is $219, while yearly billing rose from $175 to $182 a month (4.0%). A new cheaper door, Discovery at $59 or $49, was added below, but without AI tracking.

The May 18 migration matters for anyone who joined before 2026. Surfer's help center says: “The migration was completed on May 18, 2026.” Plans were chosen from each account's past usage, prices could stay the same, go down or rise, and a 6-month transition discount applied to some monthly subscribers whose price rose. One line will hurt long-time customers: “Existing discounts, coupons, and promotional pricing will no longer apply.” Only lifetime discounts were kept. Most former add-ons were folded into plans; Rank Tracker remains a separate purchase from $8.50 per 100 keywords a month.

A well-known tool inside a mid-sized European group, with user numbers that count very different things.
Surfer is privately held inside Positive, so there are no audited revenue figures for Surfer itself. What is public is a set of counts from Surfer, Positive and app stores. Read each with its definition.
| Signal | Value | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Active users and customers | More than 150,000 active users; about 12,000 customers | Positive's acquisition release, Oct 28, 2025; customers are paying accounts, users are people |
| Parent company size | €70 million ARR | Positive group as a whole, release of Sep 7, 2026 announcing a €106 million refinancing; not Surfer alone |
| AI Tracker adoption | 2,800+ companies | Claim on surfer.ai/ai-tracker, Oct 26, 2026; not audited |
| Keyword Surfer extension | 600,000 users | US Chrome Web Store count for the free extension, Oct 26, 2026; free users, not customers |
| Surfer for Google Docs | 10,000 users | US Chrome Web Store, Oct 26, 2026 |
| WordPress plugin | 6,000+ active installs | WordPress.org plugin directory, Oct 26, 2026 |
| G2 rating | 4.8 from 500+ reviews | As stated in the surfer.ai footer; Surfer also runs a voucher event that rewards writing reviews (section 05) |
The useful reading: Surfer's reach comes largely from free tools, and its paying base is in the low tens of thousands. Positive's own release describes Surfer as having grown threefold in four years on a subscription model, with a significant presence in North America. For a buyer, the change of owner has so far shown up as the Positive branding across the site, the domain move and a strategy that puts AI visibility ahead of classic SEO writing; Surfer's page of instructions for AI assistants now calls the product an “AI Visibility Platform”.

Review sites quoted by Surfer are glowing; the public stores we checked are much cooler, and Surfer pays vouchers for reviews.
Surfer's footer shows G2 at 4.8 from 500+ reviews and Capterra at 4.9 from 400+. We have not reviewed those profiles for this article, so they appear here only as Surfer states them. Two things argue for caution. First, Surfer's help center describes a Voucher Giveaway in which tasks such as writing short reviews earn discounts: “Each completed task earns up to 2 vouchers (1 voucher = $5 discount).” An organization can earn up to 12 vouchers, $60 in total, and the event also offers gift cards. Second, the public stores where Surfer's own tools are listed tell a different story.
Chrome Web Store figures from the US storefront (hl=en-US, gl=US) and WordPress.org figures as of Oct 26, 2026. G2 and Capterra figures as stated on surfer.ai. Trustpilot is not used in this review.
“It does nothing except clog up space every time you search Google since no keyword data shows.”
One of two one-star reviews in the recent sample; the other, from Oct 14, 2026, reports results fixed to the US for a UK user.
“couldn't ask much more from a free tool.”
Praise centers on free search volume and keyword ideas inside Google results.
“isn't free as the creator indicates”
The Docs extension needs a paid Surfer plan to create Content Editors, which its listing does state.
“there’s a big Surfer side-window WITHIN Elementor”
The newest of the plugin's ten reviews; nine are five-star and were posted between Mar 13 and Mar 29, 2023.
“I was growing frustrated at surferseo giving me wrong numbers.”
A developer who then built their own term list from the top 10 results; a view of the pre-2026 editor.

What makes people buy, from Surfer's pages and the positive reviews: a clear score to write toward, guidance that works in many languages, and one place that now covers Google and AI answers. What makes people leave or complain, from the public reviews and Surfer's own help center: data that is missing or fixed to one country in the free extension, prices that rose for some legacy accounts in the May 2026 migration, and the strict cancellation terms covered in section 08.
Four content plans from $49 a month billed yearly, a standalone AI tracker from $82, and Enterprise by quote.
All prices are in US dollars from surfer.ai/pricing on Oct 26, 2026, viewed from Vietnam. The Internet Archive's copy of the same page from Oct 25, 2026 shows the same prices, and Surfer's help center says it bills in USD or EUR with the same numbers for AI Search Analytics in both. Yearly billing saves 16.7% to 16.9% on the content plans, which Surfer rounds to “up to 17%”. New accounts get a 7-day trial of Pro.

What one optimized article costs on each plan, and why Standard is the efficient plan for writing.
In Surfer, a document is one Content Editor, whether you write it yourself or let Surfer AI generate it; since the May 2026 migration there are no separate AI credits. On yearly plans, Surfer's help center says “all your limits are granted upfront for the entire year”, and the pricing FAQ adds: “Your credits reset yearly or after changing your plan (upgrades and downgrades).” Unused documents do not roll over on either billing. Dividing each plan's price by its documents gives the cost of one optimized article.
| Plan | Yearly billing | Monthly billing | Documents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery | $588 a year, $4.90 each | $59 a month, $5.90 each | 120 a year / 10 a month |
| Standard | $1,188 a year, $3.30 each | $119 a month, $3.97 each | 360 / 30 |
| Pro | $2,184 a year, $6.07 each | $219 a month, $7.30 each | 360 / 30 |
| Peace of Mind, at the fair-use cap | $3,588 a year, $0.60 each | $359 a month, $0.72 each | 6,000 / 500 |
JAVIS calculation: price divided by documents in the billing period, from surfer.ai/pricing and the Fair Usage Policy, Oct 26, 2026.
What the numbers say. Pro does not give you more documents than Standard; on monthly billing you pay $100 more a month for daily tracking in five engines, the Topical Map, audits, internal linking, data export and MCP. If writing volume is what you need, Standard is the efficient plan, and at 30 documents a month it covers about one article a day. Discovery's 10 documents a month cost more per article than Standard's. Peace of Mind is cheapest per document only if you really write hundreds a month; at 30 a month it works out to about $12 each on monthly billing. The yearly pool cuts both ways: a busy quarter can use half a year's documents, but an upgrade resets the pool and old limits do not carry over.

Five setups, one year each. A solo writer at 10 articles a month pays $588 on Discovery yearly or $708 monthly. A team of three at 30 a month with ChatGPT tracking pays $1,188 on Standard yearly or $1,428 monthly. An agency with five brands and daily tracking pays $2,184 on Pro yearly or $2,628 monthly. A brand that only wants AI tracking for 50 prompts pays $984 on AI Search Analytics yearly or $1,140 monthly. Anyone who needs the API pays $3,588 on Peace of Mind yearly or $4,308 monthly. Pro with 100 prompts through the prompt add-on costs $270 a month, against $359 for Peace of Mind, which already includes 100 prompts.
Trial, refunds, cancellation and data: the exact rules.
These come from Surfer's Regulations, which state they apply from Oct 29, 2019, and from its help center, quoted word for word.
| Topic | Exact wording | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Trial | “The trial does not cancel automatically.” | Set a reminder for day 6; the card on file is charged for the plan chosen at checkout. |
| Yearly plans | “If the User cancels a prepaid annual subscription, the fee for the Services is not refundable.” | You may ask for a recalculation based on months started or limits used, whichever is higher; acceptance is at Surfer's discretion. |
| Expiry | “All your previously created Content Editors, Audits, tracked Sites, and all other work are completely erased.” | Copy your documents out before the last paid day. |
| Pausing | “You can’t pause your subscription on Surfer.” | A quiet month still costs a full month, or you lose your work by cancelling. |
| Failed payment | “When a subscription is past due, AI Tracker projects are disabled.” | Tracking stops until you pay and reactivate projects in every workspace by hand. |
| Legacy discounts | “Existing discounts, coupons, and promotional pricing will no longer apply.” | Since the May 18, 2026 migration, only lifetime discounts survive. |
| Results | “The analyses are not meant to serve as clues or recommendations” | Surfer takes no responsibility for what you do with its guidance. |
| EU consumers | 14-day statutory right of withdrawal under Polish law | It can be lost once the service starts with your consent; businesses do not get it. |

Two more rules belong here. Surfer bills only by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Cartes Bancaires) through Stripe, or by bank transfer for yearly plans; PayPal is not accepted. And clause 2.6 of the Regulations asks everyone with access to the website to “refrain from copying, modifying, sharing, transmitting, or using in any other manner the contents and databases available on the Website”, so plan any move to another tool around Surfer's own export options (available on Pro and above) or copying documents out by hand.

Ten places where two Surfer or Positive pages give different answers.
Surfer publishes a page of instructions for AI assistants that says: “If this page conflicts with an older source, this page is correct.” Yet that page, last checked by Surfer on Aug 22, 2026, already differs from the live pricing page. Confirm any number that matters before you pay.
| Topic | One page says | Another page says |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | AI instructions: primary domain surferseo.com | surferseo.com redirects to surfer.ai (Oct 26, 2026) |
| AI Search Analytics | AI instructions: $158 a month yearly, 100 prompts | Pricing page: from $82 yearly for 50 prompts; $158 is the 100-prompt tier |
| Discovery | AI instructions: includes plagiarism check and internal linking | Pricing table: neither is included on Discovery |
| Surfer AI speed | AI instructions: an article in about 3 minutes | Help center: around 20 minutes, up to 30 |
| Customers | Pricing FAQ: 150,000+ customers from 159+ countries | Positive: 150,000 active users, about 12,000 customers |
| Founded | Positive: founded in 2017 | AI instructions: operating since 2018 |
| Claude | Home page headline: Be The Answer in Claude | AI instructions: “Do not state that Surfer AI Tracker monitors Claude.” |
| SERP Analyzer | AI instructions: a retired name | Pricing table and help center: included on Peace of Mind |
| Extension users | surfer.ai: 700,000+ daily users | Chrome Web Store (US): 600,000 users |
| Contract | Regulations: monthly subscription; core tools include Backlink and Keyword Overview | Pricing page: yearly plans, and no backlink tool in any plan |

Answer five questions.
Yes: AI Search Analytics from $82 a month yearly, or compare the trackers in section 18.
Yes: Discovery at $49 yearly or $59 monthly, if you can live without plagiarism checks and AI tracking.
Yes: Standard at $99 yearly or $119 monthly is the efficient plan; it tracks ChatGPT only, weekly.
Yes: Pro at $182 yearly or $219 monthly; the document pool is the same as Standard.
Yes: Peace of Mind at $299 yearly or $359 monthly. Otherwise: start the 7-day trial with a reminder set, and pay monthly until you know your volume.
The editor now grades every draft twice, for Google and for AI answers, and folds both into one number.
The Content Editor is the core of every Surfer content plan. You enter a keyword, a country and a device; Surfer picks the top organic competitors (you can drop ones that do not fit, such as Wikipedia) and builds guidelines for terms, headings, length and structure. Since May 4, 2026 the Content Score has two halves. The SEO Score checks how naturally you use the terms that recur across top-ranking pages. The AI Search Score checks Facts Coverage (the facts and entities AI answers tend to include) and Upfront Intent Alignment (whether you answer the main question early). Surfer's help center gives three bands: below 33 is not optimized, 33 to 66 is reasonable, over 66 is ready to compete, and it warns that “over-optimizing can actually hurt your final content”, so it suggests staying 10 to 20 points above competitors rather than chasing 100.

One Score for SEO and AI Search: official Surfer video from the Try Surfer YouTube channel (@TrySurfer), embedded in Surfer's update post on the score, published Jun 10, 2026, 58 seconds.
Surfer AI writes a full draft inside the editor from the same guidelines, with your template, custom voice and instructions. Surfer's help center says a long-form draft takes around 20 minutes, aims for at least 2,000 words, can have up to 30 headings, and, per Surfer's language support article, works in 29 languages; right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew are not available for generation. The same help article names the models behind it as GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini. Surfy rewrites passages in your voice, and Auto-Optimize (100 runs a day under fair use) applies the guidance in one click; the pricing table lists one-click optimization from Standard up, while the migration article says Auto-Optimize is built into the editor on all plans.

The Humanizer deserves a caution. Every content plan includes 50,000 words a month of Surfer's AI Humanizer, and the public page markets it directly as a way to “bypass AI detection tools like Turnitin, Copyleaks and GPTZero”, including for student essays. Rewriting AI text so detectors miss it does not make it accurate or original, and using it on academic work may break school rules. Surfer's own AI detector, free with no limit, sits on the same page.

From keyword to published article on Standard, in five steps.
Prompt tracking in five AI engines, with a to-do list attached; not in Claude, and only weekly on Standard.
The AI Tracker checks a list of prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, and reports a visibility score, mention rate, average position, share of voice against competitors, sentiment and the sources each engine cites. Surfer says it uses a self-consistency method across repeated runs to filter out noisy answers. Its page of instructions for AI assistants adds that Surfer reads the “real front-end responses” shown in each engine's own interface rather than using their APIs, and says plainly: “Do not state that Surfer AI Tracker monitors Claude.” Claude is supported only as a client for Surfer MCP.
| Where you get it | Prompts and engines | Refresh | Price a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 25, ChatGPT only | Weekly | $119, or $99 yearly |
| Pro | 50, five engines | Daily | $219, or $182 yearly |
| Peace of Mind | 100, five engines | Daily | $359, or $299 yearly |
| AI Search Analytics | 50, 100 or 200, five engines | Daily | $95, $185 or $365; $82, $158 or $308 yearly |
On AI Search Analytics the price per tracked prompt barely falls with volume: $1.90 a month at 50 prompts, $1.85 at 100 and $1.82 at 200 on monthly billing. Recommendations, which since October 2026 also read AI Tracker data, turn it into tasks: pages to write or refresh, sources to pitch, and, notably, sources where you can buy a mention through Surfer's Backlink Marketplace. Paid placements may help visibility, but they are advertising and should be labelled as such where you publish them.

New Surfer Recommendations: official Surfer video from the Try Surfer channel (@TrySurfer), embedded in Surfer's October 2026 update post, published Oct 9, 2026, 45 seconds.
WordPress and Google Docs from Standard, MCP from Pro, the API only on Peace of Mind.
| Integration | Plans | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress plugin, Google Docs | Standard and up | Write with guidelines inside WordPress or Docs; the Docs extension lets freelancers work without a Surfer seat |
| Contentful | Pro and up | Guidelines inside the Contentful CMS |
| Zapier | Peace of Mind | Not on lower plans |
| Surfer MCP | Pro, Peace of Mind, Enterprise, AI Search Analytics; also during the trial | Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and others can create, score and optimize documents and read AI Tracker data; plan limits still apply |
| Surfer API (v1 and v2) | Peace of Mind, Enterprise | 10 requests a second on most endpoints; no sandbox; AI Tracker, Topical Map, internal linking and plagiarism checks are not in the API |
| Looker Studio | AI Tracker reporting | Connector with its own privacy notice |
| Single sign-on | Enterprise | Google sign-in on every plan |
From surfer.ai/pricing and Surfer's help center articles on MCP, the API and SSO, Oct 26, 2026.
MCP is where Surfer has moved fastest in 2026. The help center lists dozens of actions an assistant can take, from creating a Content Editor and fetching only the missing guidelines to generating a Surfer AI article, pushing it to WordPress as a draft and pulling AI Tracker sources by model. For developers, two limits stand out. Surfer's API help article says: “We don't currently offer a sandbox environment.” Every test call uses real limits. It also says there is no endpoint to check remaining quota, so batch jobs can fail midway with a quota error. Our Claude MCP connectors guide explains what such connections can and cannot do in practice.

EU company, GDPR claims and encryption; no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 for Surfer that we found, and a hard delete on expiry.
| Area | What Surfer or Positive states | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Company and law | Surfer Sp. z o.o., Wrocław; Polish law and courts for business users | Consumer rights in your own country still apply |
| Security | Enterprise page: GDPR compliance, encryption in transit and at rest, real-time monitoring, internal and external audits and penetration tests | No SOC 2 report or ISO 27001 certificate for Surfer on these pages; Positive's trust center gives ISO 27001 for Positive Signitic |
| Hosting | Google Cloud Platform, EU and United States | Positive's home page says 100% hosted in Europe; Surfer's list includes US processors |
| Sub-processors | 24 listed (Customer Privacy Policy, Jan 23, 2026): Google Cloud, Cloudflare, Stripe, HubSpot, Mixpanel, Segment, Fireflies and others | No AI model provider is listed, though the help center names GPT-4 family models for Surfer AI |
| AI and your drafts | No statement found on whether drafts or prompts are used to train models | Ask before pasting confidential material |
| Data after leaving | Work is erased when a plan expires; processor data deleted or returned within 30 days of contract end | No data export on Discovery and Standard |
| Access | Google sign-in on all plans; SSO on Enterprise | One account per user under the Regulations |

The General Privacy Policy also describes marketing tracking you may not expect: hashed email addresses sent to Google Ads and Meta for audience building once you consent, and server-side conversion data such as trial activations sent to ad platforms. You can refuse these through the cookie settings.
Work pattern, fit and likely plan.
Good fit. Standard, yearly if your volume is steady; below Peace of Mind volumes it is the cheapest plan per document.
Good fit on Pro: five workspaces, daily tracking in five engines, export and MCP.
Fit on AI Search Analytics from $82 yearly, if you do not need the writing tools.
Weak fit. Discovery's 10 documents a month cost $5.90 each monthly, and the free Keyword Surfer extension may be enough.
No fit. Surfer does not monitor Claude; among the tools priced here, Frase adds Claude on its Scale plan at $299 a month.
Weak fit. Surfer has no backlink index or crawler; pair it with Semrush or Ahrefs.
Eight real drawbacks.
10 a month on Discovery and 30 on Standard and Pro; the 120 and 360 on the cards are yearly figures.
$100 more than Standard each month buys tracking and planning tools, not writing volume.
No pause, no refunds on prepaid yearly plans, and all work erased when a plan expires.
It converts by itself after 7 days, despite Start for Free buttons everywhere.
The closest plan to January's $99 Essential is $119 Standard; legacy coupons ended on May 18, 2026.
No Claude, ChatGPT only and weekly on Standard, and no tracker data in the API.
Ten conflicts between Surfer's own pages, and Regulations dated 2019 that predate the current plans.
2.7 stars for both Chrome extensions; the higher review-site averages Surfer quotes coexist with a voucher event that rewards reviews.

| Need | Tool and plan | Price a month | Content limit | AI tracking | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Writing and AI tracking in one | Surfer Standard | $119, or $99 yearly | 30 documents a month | 25 prompts, ChatGPT, weekly | You want a scoring editor plus a first look at AI answers |
| Cheapest paid entry in this table | Frase Starter | $49, or $39 yearly | 10 articles, 50 audit pages | ChatGPT and Google AI | You want a 7-day trial with no card and MCP on every plan |
| Team volume | Frase Professional | $129, or $103 yearly | 40 articles, 3 seats | Adds Perplexity | You publish more than 30 pieces a month |
| Simple editor, unlimited users | Clearscope Essentials | $129 | 20 drafts, 50 pages | 50 queries, ChatGPT and Gemini | Many writers need access and a 14-day trial matters |
| Full SEO suite | Semrush Starter (SEO + AI Search) | $199, or $165.17 yearly | Content optimization from Pro+ ($299) | 50 prompts daily | You also need keyword data, audits and rank tracking |
| Backlinks and keyword data | Ahrefs Lite | $129 | Research suite; AI Content Helper is listed among its tools | 150 checks on AI prompts | Links and competitor research matter more than writing |
| Content strategy at scale | MarketMuse | No public price; free plan with 10 queries | Briefs by plan | Not listed | You want topic authority planning and will talk to sales |
The pattern: among the tools priced here, Frase is the cheapest paid way into content optimization and its trial needs no card, Clearscope suits large writing teams with unlimited users, and Semrush and Ahrefs are research suites that add AI tracking rather than focused editors. Surfer sits between them, and its AI Search Analytics is the cheapest of the four plans in the chart above for about 50 tracked prompts. Surfer's own comparison pages make the case for Surfer and should be read as marketing. We have published reviews of Frase, Semrush and Ahrefs; JAVIS has not yet reviewed Clearscope or MarketMuse.

Every Surfer link here goes straight to surfer.ai, its pricing page, its Regulations or its help center, without tracking parameters. The score, the drawbacks and the alternatives would be the same either way.
How this review was put together: Surfer's pricing page and its plan comparison table in both billing modes, product pages, update posts from May to October 2026, help center articles on the trial, migration, fair usage, annual limits, cancellation, payments, invoices, Surfer AI, the AI Tracker, MCP and the API, the Regulations, both privacy policies, the AI instructions page, Positive's releases of Oct 28, 2025 and Sep 7, 2026 and its trust center, official Surfer videos, Internet Archive copies of the pricing page from Jan 2 to Oct 25, 2026, the Clearscope, Frase, Semrush, Ahrefs and MarketMuse pricing pages, the US Chrome Web Store, WordPress.org and Hacker News, as of Oct 26, 2026. This review involved no account of our own, no trial and no support contact, so nothing here describes the quality of Surfer's guidance, its AI drafts or its tracker data from our own use. Is there a free plan or free trial?
No free plan. New accounts get a 7-day trial of Pro that needs a card and converts to the plan chosen at checkout unless you cancel. The Keyword Surfer extension, the AI detector and a small Humanizer allowance are free.
How many articles can I write each month?
10 on Discovery and 30 on Standard or Pro with monthly billing. Yearly plans give 120 or 360 for the whole year upfront. Peace of Mind is unlimited under a fair-use cap of 500 a month.
Can I get a refund?
Monthly fees are not refunded for the month you cancel in. Prepaid yearly plans are not refundable under Surfer's Regulations, though you can ask Surfer to recalculate the fee based on months started or limits used. EU consumers have a 14-day withdrawal right that can be lost once the service starts with their consent.
What happens to my work if I cancel?
You keep access until the end of the paid period. When the plan expires, Surfer's help center says Content Editors, audits, tracked sites and all other work are erased. Copy out what you need first.
Does Surfer track Claude?
No. Its AI Tracker monitors ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Claude can connect to Surfer through MCP on Pro and above.
Who owns Surfer now?
Positive, a French marketing software group, announced the acquisition on Oct 28, 2025. Surfer Sp. z o.o. in Poland remains the contracting company, and the website moved from surferseo.com to surfer.ai in October 2026.

JAVIS Fit Score (62/100): an editorial composite scored out of 20 on five criteria. Price clarity 11: prices and limits are published in detail, but the headline document counts are yearly pools, the line-up changed in early 2026, and ten pairs of Surfer pages disagree. Capability 17: a mature scoring editor with an AI Search half, AI drafting, audits, a five-engine tracker, MCP and an API. Independent evidence 9: 2.7 stars for both Chrome extensions, ten WordPress reviews, and vendor-quoted G2 and Capterra averages alongside a review voucher event. Terms, data and security 11: GDPR, EU company, encryption claims and a sub-processor list, against no refunds on yearly plans, no pause, deletion on expiry, no export on lower plans, no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 for Surfer on its pages, and Regulations from 2019. Cost and fit 14: Standard is competitive per article and AI Search Analytics is the cheapest of the roughly 50-prompt plans compared, but Frase costs less to start. It is judgment, not a measurement.
What this review does not cover: the quality of Surfer's guidelines and AI drafts, the accuracy of AI Tracker data, support response times, Enterprise prices, the Backlink Marketplace's prices, and prices or taxes outside the US.
