Writesonic Review 2026: The AI Writer That Became an AI Search Visibility Platform, and What $99 to $499 a Month Really Buys
Writesonic no longer sells itself as an AI writing tool. Its home page now calls it an AI search growth engine: it tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand, then offers AI agents, articles and site audits to close the gaps. On writesonic.com/pricing as of Oct 26, 2026, Starter costs $99 a month or $79 billed annually, Basic $249 or $199 and Growth $499 or $399, with Enterprise by quote. The cheapest way into its AI tracking is far lower than in March 2026, when tracking started at $249. But the article allowances shrank sharply in the 2026 reshuffle, the full Action Center, content optimization and six of the nine AI platforms sit in Enterprise only, the refund window is seven days, and several Writesonic pages still describe older plans, a free plan and figures that no longer match the pricing page.

| Made by | Writesonic, Inc., a Delaware corporation based in San Francisco; says it raised $2.6M in 2021 and has been profitable since |
| What it is | An AI search visibility tracker with an Action Center, AI agents, an AI article writer and site audits |
| Plans | Starter $99; Basic $249; Growth $499 a month, or $79, $199 and $399 billed annually; Enterprise custom |
| Limits | 50, 100 or 200 prompts on three AI platforms; 15, 25 or 50 AI articles a month; 1, 1 or 2 projects |
| Best for | Marketing teams that want to see and act on AI answers about their brand, and agencies pitching that work |
Writesonic now sells AI search visibility first and writing second, and its cheaper plans watch the problem more than they fix it.
“Diagnosis is cheap. Execution is the moat.”
That line from Writesonic's own about page is a fair summary of how the company wants to be judged. It no longer pitches the template-based AI writer many people remember. Writesonic now tracks a list of prompts in AI engines, shows how often your brand appears and which sources get cited, and then promises to fix the gaps through content, outreach and technical work, all from one platform.
Judged by its own line, the self-serve plans are a mixed deal. Tracking is the part you get everywhere: Starter covers 50 prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews for $99 a month, which is $150 less than the cheapest plan with AI tracking in March 2026. The execution part is rationed. The Action Center, which ranks fixes and runs them, is a trial on Growth (5 off-page and 5 on-page actions a month) and only complete on Enterprise. Content Optimization is ticked for Enterprise only in Writesonic's plan table. Agentic workflows come as 10, 50 or 100 trial runs. And the other six AI platforms Writesonic advertises, including Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Mode, need Enterprise.
The writing side also got smaller. In March 2026, the plan that cost $249 a month included 100 AI articles and 40 site audits. On Oct 26, 2026 the plan at that price, Basic, includes 25 articles and 20 audits. Writesonic's own help center still lists the older allowances. If you are coming back to Writesonic for the writer, compare the article count first.
Track prompts in AI engines, see who gets cited, then fix gaps with content, outreach and technical work.
Writesonic is organized around projects, one per website or brand. Inside a project you choose topics and competitors, track a list of prompts (the questions buyers might ask an AI engine) and see your visibility score, share of voice, sentiment and the domains AI answers cite. Your plan decides the pools: prompts and daily answers, AI platforms, AI articles, site audits, agent runs, users and projects. Writesonic, Inc. is a Delaware corporation with a San Francisco address, and its about page says it raised $2.6M in 2021 and has been profitable since.

From five writing-led plans to three AI visibility tiers, in about eight months.
Writesonic's pricing page carries no change log, so the record here comes from Internet Archive copies of that page. They show three different line-ups within 2026.
| Date of copy | Plans on writesonic.com/pricing | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 8, 2025 to Mar 2, 2026 | Lite $49 ($39 yearly), Standard $99 ($79), Professional $249 ($199), Advanced $499 ($399), Enterprise | AI search tracking only from Professional, the $249 plan |
| Apr 1, 2026 | Lite, Standard, Basic $249 ($199), Growth $499 ($399) | Professional and Advanced renamed Basic and Growth |
| May 1, 2026 | Starter $99 ($79), Basic, Growth, Enterprise | Lite and Standard gone; Starter adds 50 tracked prompts at Standard's old price |
| Jun 3 to Oct 25, 2026 | Same prices, redesigned page; 15, 25 and 50 AI articles | Matches the live page on Oct 26, 2026 |
Two changes pull in opposite directions. The entry price for AI tracking fell by 60%, from $249 a month on Professional to $99 on Starter. But the cheapest plan of any kind doubled, from $49 a month on Lite to $99 on Starter. The free trial without a card stayed; the home page now calls it a 7-Day Free Trial.

The article allowances shrank
At the same $249 monthly price, the March 2026 Professional plan listed 100 AI articles, 40 site audits of 1,200 pages, two users and three projects. Basic, as of Oct 26, 2026, lists 25 AI articles, 20 audits of 1,200 pages, two users and one project: 75% fewer articles and half the audits. Writesonic's help center page on subscription plans, last updated Mar 13, 2026, still lists Basic with 100 articles and Growth with 200, against 25 and 50 on the pricing page.
Perplexity moved too. In the March 2, 2026 copy, the $249 plan tracked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and the $499 plan added Gemini. On Oct 26, 2026, both plans track ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity is listed only for Enterprise.

The old products are still online
Chatsonic, Writesonic's chat assistant, is no longer a plan on the pricing page. Its page at writesonic.com/chat still carries the old blue Writesonic logo and navigation, and it still advertises a free plan and a $16 Individual plan with models such as GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. The Writesonic vs Jasper comparison page is in the same state. Whether those plans can still be bought is not stated anywhere on the current pricing page, which does not list them.

A small, founder-led company with big usage claims, three different customer counts and no independent financials.
Writesonic is private and publishes no audited figures. What it does publish counts very different things, so each number below keeps its own definition.
| Signal | Figure | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Customers | 10,000+, 13,000+ or 30,000+ | Vendor claims on the pricing page, the help center (Jun 15, 2026) and the SEO AI Agent page; none defines a customer |
| Dataset | 2,047,329,164+ AI conversations | Prompts and answers Writesonic says it holds, shown on the home page; not users |
| Articles | 1M+ produced | Cumulative output claimed on the AI Article Writer page |
| Funding | $2.6M raised in 2021 | About page, which adds that Writesonic has been profitable since; backers named include Y Combinator |
| Own AI search revenue | $2M+ ARR | Revenue Writesonic says it wins through its own AI visibility, not total company revenue |
| Team | 50+ people | Engineers, AI researchers and growth operators, per the about page |
| Chrome extension | 70,000 users, 4.6 from 3.7K ratings | US Chrome Web Store; free extension users, not paying customers |
| WordPress plugin | 1,000+ active installs, no ratings | WordPress.org, plugin updated Aug 13, 2026 |

The competitive field is crowded. Writesonic's own comparison pages line it up against Profound, Peec AI, Scrunch, AthenaHQ, HubSpot, Semrush, Ahrefs, BrightEdge, Conductor and AirOps, among others, which tells you where it now thinks its buyers are: marketing teams choosing an AI visibility tool, not writers choosing an AI writer.

Independent evidence about the new Writesonic is thin; most public reviews describe the old writer.
Writesonic's pages show a G2 logo with 2,031 reviews and a Capterra logo with 2,102 reviews, and the AI Ads Tracker page says it is rated 4.8 on G2. We have not reviewed those profiles for this article, so the figures appear here only as Writesonic states them. Most of those reviews would also predate the move to AI visibility, which only became the main product during 2026.
The one large public rating tied to Writesonic is its Chrome extension. On the US Chrome Web Store it is now called Writesonic - SEO Keywords & AI Search Insights, with 4.6 stars from 3.7K ratings and 70,000 users. It is the same store listing Writesonic used for its Chatsonic extension, so much of that average likely comes from the Chatsonic years. The store does not date the average.

“Spams my laptop like crazy.”
The newest English review of the extension when sorted by recent.
“Often times I would see my own product descriptions nearly verbatim in the output.”
A past user describing the older writing product, in a thread about AI and content creators.
“I've been using WriteSonic for awhile, and it seems like a pretty good alternative”
A user of the old writer. Positive, but from before the 2026 change.
The newest reviews on the store are mixed. Of the five most recent English ones, the two one-star reviews from 2026 complain that it spams the laptop and cannot be turned off, a four-star review from Jan 29, 2026 calls it solid for keyword research, and two five-star reviews date from 2025. Five reviews are not a sample, and neither are the comments above. They show the gap: 13 Hacker News comments name Writesonic as of Oct 26, 2026, two of them from 2026, and all of them are about the writing tool; none discusses the AI visibility plans. A 2023 comment that called Writesonic careless with facts came from the builder of a competing article tool, so we leave it aside. If you are evaluating the 2026 product, the most useful evidence will be your own seven-day trial on your own prompts.

Three self-serve plans from $79 a month billed annually, an agency plan, and Enterprise by quote.
All prices are in US dollars from writesonic.com/pricing on Oct 26, 2026. We viewed the page from Vietnam; the page has no currency or region switch, and the Internet Archive copy captured on Oct 25, 2026 shows the same prices. Annual billing is paid upfront for twelve months, and Writesonic rounds the discount to 20%.

Two add-ons are priced on the pricing page's FAQ: extra users at $50 a month each (up to 3 more on Basic and 2 more on Growth, a maximum of 5), and 20 extra articles for $100 a month, on Growth only. Starter has no add-ons. Writesonic also offers free tools, such as an AI crawl checker, that need no login.

Agencies have a separate price list
The agency page sells a Starter plan at $250 a month, or $200 billed annually, with 20 pitch projects a month (each runs for one to seven days and then pauses), 2,000 answers a month and unlimited users, on every tracked model except Claude and Muse Spark. A won client becomes a standard project from $150 a month. Agency Enterprise is quoted.

Starter checks each prompt once a day; Basic and Growth check it three times, which makes Starter the expensive plan per answer.
The pricing page lists two tracking numbers per plan: prompts and answers tracked daily. Starter has 50 of each, so across three platforms it can record one answer per prompt per day. Basic and Growth record three answers per prompt per day, which matches one answer on each of the three platforms. Writesonic does not explain how Starter splits its 50 daily answers across platforms; ask before you buy if you need every engine every day.
Swipe sideways to see the whole table.
| Plan | Per prompt a month | Answers in 30 days | Per 1,000 answers | Per AI article | Audit pages a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $1.98 / $1.58 | 1,500 | $66.00 / $52.67 | $6.60 / $5.27 | 1,000 |
| Basic | $2.49 / $1.99 | 9,000 | $27.67 / $22.11 | $9.96 / $7.96 | 24,000 |
| Growth | $2.50 / $2.00 | 18,000 | $27.72 / $22.17 | $9.98 / $7.98 | 125,000 |
Three setups make the trade-offs concrete, all at annual prices:
Trial, refunds, renewal, cancellation and data: the exact rules.
These come from Writesonic's Terms of Service (last updated May 12, 2026), its pricing page FAQ and its help center. Where they differ, the Terms say which document wins: an Order Form first, then the Data Processing Agreement, then the Terms, then the Privacy Policy.
| Topic | What Writesonic says |
|---|---|
| Trial | “No. Sign up and explore Writesonic with full access. No credit card. No hidden catches.” (pricing FAQ). Product pages call it a 7-Day Free Trial. |
| Refund | “Customer may request a full refund of the initial subscription fee within seven (7) days of first purchase by emailing” support. “After that 7-day window, fees are non-refundable except where required by law.” (Terms 12.6). Enterprise and agency plans under an Order Form are non-refundable. |
| Cancel mid-cycle | “Refunds are not issued for the remaining period of the billing cycle.” (help center) |
| Renewal | “Online plans may be cancelled through the in-product account page at any time, with cancellation effective at the end of the then-current billing cycle.” (Terms 12.3) |
| Price changes | Fees can change at the next renewal with at least 30 days' notice (Terms 12.4). |
| Unused allowance | “Unused credits do not carry over to the next month.” (help center) |
| After you leave | “for thirty (30) days after termination, Writesonic will make Customer Data available for export through documented self-service mechanisms; thereafter Writesonic will delete Customer Data subject to the DPA and applicable law.” (Terms 14.3) |
| Heavy use | “Unusually high usage or sharing of login details could lead to account suspension or deletion without prior notice.” Writesonic adds that it will not refund in these cases (help center fair usage policy). |
The practical reading: the trial needs no card, so it cannot convert into a charge by itself. Once you pay, you have seven days to ask for your first payment back by email. On our reading of the Terms, that covers the first month on monthly billing and the whole upfront year on annual billing, if you ask in time. After that, cancelling stops the next renewal but refunds nothing. Export within 30 days of leaving.

Ten places where two Writesonic pages give different answers.
Writesonic rebuilt its main site in 2026 but left older pages and help articles online. When two pages disagree, treat the pricing page and the Terms as the current word, and get anything that matters to you confirmed in writing.

Answer five questions.
Daily answers from real AI interfaces, scored for visibility, citations and sentiment.
The tracker is the heart of the 2026 product. You set topics, competitors and prompts; Writesonic runs those prompts every day and records whether your brand is mentioned, which pages and domains are cited, and, from Growth, how the answer describes you. Its tracker page explains the method in one line: “We crawl ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI, and 6 more platforms like a real user. Not through APIs.” The help center goes further and says Writesonic scrapes the web interfaces of AI platforms so the results match what a buyer sees.

That method has a clear upside and a risk the pages do not discuss. The upside is realism: an AI engine's app and its developer interface can answer the same question differently, and Writesonic's help center argues that only the app shows what buyers see. The risk is dependence on interfaces Writesonic does not control. If a platform changes its app or limits automated sessions, data for that engine could have gaps. Writesonic's pages do not say how it handles that, so it is worth asking during a demo.
| Item | Starter | Basic | Growth | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platforms | 3 | 3 | 3 | 9 |
| Prompts | 50 | 100 | 200 | Custom |
| Answers a day | 50 | 300 | 600 | Custom |
| Markets | 1 | 1 | 1 | Custom |
| Sentiment | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Action Center | No | No | Trial | Full |
Writesonic's official channel has a tour of the dashboard. It is from June 2026, so details may have moved, but it shows the overview, visibility score, share of voice and citation views the pricing page refers to.
From a list of prompts to a fixed page, on Growth, in five steps.
The fix side is the core of Writesonic's pitch, and it is where the self-serve plans are thinnest.
The Action Center turns tracking into a to-do list ranked by what Writesonic calls an ICE score (impact, confidence, effort). It covers on-page work (new topics, page refreshes with FAQs and comparison tables), off-page work (sites that cite competitors, Reddit threads, digital PR) and technical fixes such as robots.txt rules that block AI crawlers. The pricing FAQ is direct about access: “Available on Growth (trial) and Enterprise (full).”

One part deserves care. The off-page view drafts replies for Reddit threads where competitors are mentioned and you are not. Reddit communities often treat undisclosed brand promotion as spam, and a backlash in a thread that AI engines cite can work against you. Use that feature with clear disclosure, or not at all.
The AI Article Writer and Content Agent
The writing tools are still on every plan. The AI Article Writer page promises “100+ steps. 11 expert frameworks.” for each article, with research from search results, Ahrefs data and Writesonic's prompt dataset, followed by a humanizer pass. The Content Agent writes other formats, from LinkedIn posts to whitepapers, in your brand voice. What you get is 15, 25 or 50 articles a month and 1, 5 or 10 brand voices. The Content Optimization tool, which scores an existing page and suggests fixes, is ticked only for Enterprise in the plan table.

The Terms add one line every content buyer should read: “Identical or similar Outputs may be generated for other customers, and Outputs are not unique to Customer.” You own what Writesonic writes for you, but you should still edit it into something only your team could have written, which is also what AI engines tend to reward.
Shopping and ads tracking
Writesonic also sells trackers for product recommendations in AI shopping answers and for ads inside AI answers. On the pricing page, ads monitoring is listed on every plan, while shopping and agentic commerce tracking is listed under Enterprise.

A read-only MCP on every paid plan, WordPress everywhere, and analytics integrations only on Enterprise.
Writesonic's MCP server lets an AI assistant query your Writesonic data in plain language. The MCP page answers the two questions that matter: it is “Read-only access to your live Writesonic data”, with write actions on the roadmap, and “The MCP ships on every paid Writesonic plan.” Sign-in uses OAuth, and you can revoke a client from your account settings. Writesonic lists ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Lovable, n8n and Notion among supported clients. If you are new to connecting tools to Claude, our Claude MCP connectors guide explains how such connectors are set up and what to watch.

The integrations page lists more than 20 connections: content systems such as WordPress, Sanity, Contentful and Drupal, CDN log sources such as Cloudflare, Fastly, Vercel and CloudFront for counting AI crawler visits, and data sources such as Search Console, Keyword Planner and Ahrefs. The plan table is narrower than the page suggests: Search Console and WordPress are on every plan, while GA4 and Looker Studio are Enterprise only.

The REST API exports projects, prompts, citations, performance reports and site audit issues with an API key. The pricing page does not say which plans include the API; the older help center plan page listed API access on Basic. Confirm it before you build on it.
SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR claims, a clear no-training promise, and a US-only list of 44 sub-processors.
| Question | Answer from Writesonic's pages |
|---|---|
| Certifications | SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR on the enterprise page; SOC 2, GDPR and HIPAA marked compliant in the trust center, with documents on request |
| Training on your data | No, including trials (Terms 6.4 and 6.5) |
| AI model providers | OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, Azure for Anthropic models, Google Cloud, OpenRouter, Cohere, Stability AI and models Writesonic hosts on Azure or AWS |
| Where data lives | All 44 sub-processors in the DPA list United States as their region; transfers from the EEA and UK use Standard Contractual Clauses |
| Deletion | Customer data deleted up to 30 days after account deletion; billing records kept 7 years |
| Access control | SSO/SAML and user access control on Enterprise only |
| Sub-processor changes | 30 days' notice; objection within 15 days |
The no-training promise is unusually explicit: “Writesonic does not use Customer Data to train or fine-tune any general-purpose, foundation, or large-language model offered by Writesonic or by any Model Provider”, and the Terms extend it to trials. The Privacy Policy then lists each model provider with its own retention, for example up to 30 days of abuse monitoring at OpenAI unless zero data retention applies.

Two contract points are worth knowing. Customers may not “publish benchmarks, performance metrics, or comparative analyses of the Service without Writesonic's prior written consent” (Terms 5(j)), which matters if your agency wants to publish a tool comparison. And disputes go to the courts of Wilmington, Delaware, with a jury waiver and a liability cap at the fees paid in the prior twelve months.

Work pattern, fit and likely plan.
| Work pattern | Fit | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Solo marketer curious whether ChatGPT recommends their product | Good for a first look | Starter, or the 7-day trial alone |
| Small team tracking 100 prompts on all three engines and publishing weekly | Good | Basic |
| Growth team that wants prioritized fixes and sentiment | Good, with a trial-size Action Center | Growth |
| Brand that must watch Perplexity, Claude or Copilot | Only on a quote | Enterprise |
| Agency pitching AI visibility audits | Good | Agency Starter, $200 a month billed annually |
| Writer who wants a cheap AI writing tool | Poor | Look elsewhere |
Eight real drawbacks.
On the plus side, the trial needs no card, annual billing saves about 20%, the no-training promise covers trials, the MCP is on every paid plan, and the AI tracking entry price is 60% lower than in March 2026.
Surfer, Frase, Peec AI, Profound, Jasper and Copy.ai, priced on the same day.
All prices from each vendor's own pricing page on Oct 26, 2026, in US dollars as shown to a Vietnam connection, monthly price first and annual price per month in brackets. Writesonic pitches itself mainly against AI visibility tools; for a writing-first buyer, Jasper and Copy.ai are the more natural comparison.

| Need | Product and plan | Price | AI tracking | Content | JAVIS review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI tracking plus writing | Writesonic Starter | $99 ($79) | 50 prompts, 3 engines | 15 AI articles | This page |
| More engines on a budget | Surfer AI Search Analytics | $95 ($82) | 50 prompts, refreshed daily; ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and other models | None | Not yet |
| Content editor plus tracking | Surfer Standard | $119 ($99) | 25 prompts, weekly | 30 documents a month | Not yet |
| Lower-cost content plus tracking | Frase Starter | $49 ($39) | 20 prompts; ChatGPT, Google AI | 10 articles | Frase review |
| Tracking with Perplexity | Frase Professional | $129 ($103) | 50 prompts; adds Perplexity | 40 articles | Frase review |
| Tracking for a whole team | Peec AI Starter | $95 a month | 50 prompts, 3 models of your choice | None | Not yet |
| Enterprise AI visibility | Profound | Free 7-day trial, then custom | Trial: 50 prompts daily, 3 engines | AI Marketer credits | Not yet |
| Brand voice writing | Jasper Pro | $69 ($59) a seat | GEO agents on Business | Canvas, agents | Jasper review |
| Chat-based writing | Copy.ai Chat | $29 ($24) | None | Unlimited chat words, 5 seats | Not yet |
Read side by side, Writesonic Starter costs $4 a month more than Surfer's standalone tracker and Peec AI's Starter, but adds 15 articles and site audits; Surfer's plan shows five engine icons against Writesonic's three, and Peec lets you choose your three models and add unlimited users. Frase Professional costs more but adds Perplexity and 40 articles. For brand-voice copy rather than AI visibility, Jasper Pro at $59 a seat billed yearly is the closer match. Writesonic's own pitch rests on the Action Center, one ranked list of content, citation and technical fixes; on self-serve plans you only get a trial of it, on Growth.

Questions people ask before committing
How much does Writesonic cost in 2026?
Per writesonic.com/pricing on Oct 26, 2026: Starter $99, Basic $249 and Growth $499 a month on monthly billing, or $79, $199 and $399 a month billed annually. Enterprise is quoted after a demo. Agencies have a separate Starter plan at $250 a month, or $200 billed annually.
Is there a free plan?
Not on the pricing page. There is a 7-day free trial that needs no credit card. An older Chatsonic page still shows a free plan, but the pricing page lists no such plan.
Is Writesonic still an AI writer?
Partly. Every plan includes the AI Article Writer and Content Agent, with 15, 25 or 50 articles a month, but the product is now built around tracking and improving how AI engines mention your brand.
Which AI engines does Writesonic track?
ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on Starter, Basic and Growth. Enterprise adds Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Google AI Mode and Muse Spark, nine in total per the pricing page.
Can I get a refund?
Self-serve customers can ask for a full refund of the first payment within seven days by email. After that, fees are not refundable except where the law requires, and cancelling mid-cycle refunds nothing. Plans bought under an Order Form, including Enterprise and agency plans, are not refundable.
What happens to my data when I leave?
Writesonic keeps your data available for export for 30 days after termination and then deletes it. Its Privacy Policy says customer data is deleted up to 30 days after account deletion.
Does Writesonic train AI on my content?
Its Terms say it does not use customer data to train or fine-tune general-purpose models, its own or its providers', and the promise covers trials too.

JAVIS Fit Score (61/100): an editorial composite scored out of 20 on five criteria. Price clarity 12: both billing modes and a detailed plan table are published, but allowances changed sharply in 2026 and ten pairs of Writesonic pages disagree. Capability 16: daily tracking from real AI interfaces, citations, sentiment, an Action Center, an article pipeline, site audits, a read-only MCP and an API, with much of the fix side and most engines held back for Enterprise. Independent evidence 8: a 4.6 Chrome extension rating that likely comes mostly from the Chatsonic years, a handful of Hacker News comments about the old writer, and vendor-stated G2 and Capterra counts. Terms, data and security 14: SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR claims, an explicit no-training promise covering trials, a full sub-processor list and a 30-day export window, against a 7-day refund window, a benchmark-publishing restriction and US-only processing. Cost and fit 11: the AI tracking entry price is competitive, but Basic and Growth are expensive for three engines and the cheaper plans omit the fixes Writesonic sells on. It is judgment, not a measurement.
What this review does not cover: the accuracy of Writesonic's tracking data, the quality of its articles and fixes, support response times, Enterprise prices, Chatsonic's current availability, and prices or taxes outside the US.
