Google Gemini Review 2026: 950 Million Monthly Users, a Cheaper Ultra, and a New Frontier Model You Can't Use Yet
Gemini is now the second-biggest consumer AI assistant by almost every measure, and Google has been busy. On Sept 30 it announced Gemini 4 Argon, its next frontier model, but only to a small group of trusted cyber defenders for now. The Ultra plan dropped from $249.99 to $99.99 at Google I/O. A personal agent called Gemini Spark arrived for Ultra subscribers. Gems are being folded into something called skills. And in May, paying subscribers got new five-hour usage windows and a lot of complaints. This review checks what is true today against Google's own plan page, release notes and blog, then adds what real users are saying.
| Ownership | Google (Alphabet) |
| Free tier | Real -- 3.6 Flash, Deep Research, Live |
| Cheapest paid plan | $4.99/mo (AI Plus, US) |
| Monthly users (Alphabet, Q2) | 950M Gemini app MAU |
| Trustpilot record | 1.5/5, 1,293 reviews |
The best value in consumer AI if you live in Google's apps. The weakest if you need predictable limits or a flagship model today.
"Gemini's real advantage is not that its model beats everyone's; it's that it already sits inside Gmail, Docs, Drive, Chrome, Android and now Windows, and Google bundles it with storage and YouTube so aggressively that the price per useful thing is hard to beat. The weakness is that Google sells compute-based limits you cannot see in advance, ships a new Flash model every few weeks, and announces its biggest model to security partners first. If you want a calm, predictable tool, that rhythm can feel chaotic."
My read: Free is generous enough to judge Gemini fairly, AI Pro at $19.99 is the sensible paid tier for most people (it bundles 5 TB of storage and Chrome auto browse), and AI Plus at $4.99 is a surprisingly cheap way to double your free usage. Ultra only makes sense if you want Spark, Deep Think or heavy video work, and even then read the limits section first.
One assistant spread across the app, Chrome, Android, Windows, Workspace and the developer API.
As of this check the Gemini app offers chat on the Flash and Pro model families, Deep Research, Gemini Live (voice, now integrated into chat), Canvas, image generation (Nano Banana), video creation (Gemini Omni), music (Lyria 3.5), Gemini Notebook (research and study notebooks), Daily Brief, Personal Intelligence, Gemini in Chrome, and Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal agent. It runs on Android, iOS, the web and, since Sept 10, a Windows desktop app (macOS already existed). Behind it sit the Gemini API and AI Studio for developers and Gemini Enterprise for companies.
One piece of context: Gemini is a first-party Google product, so there is no acquisition or rebrand story here. The only naming change worth knowing is that Bard became Gemini long ago and, as of Sept 30, Gems are being replaced by "skills".
Number two by a wide margin, gaining share through 2026, and backed by a company that can bundle it with storage and YouTube.
Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings call (Jul 22), reported by 9to5Google. Monthly active users, not subscribers. Was 750M+ in Feb.
Company-stated adoption, Q2 2026 call. Definition of "use" not given.
Google Cloud, driven by AI demand; not Gemini-app revenue.
Third-party estimate (Similarweb May 2026 via press; FirstPageSage Oct: 26.9%). Traffic, not users.

Review sites like it. Trustpilot reviewers do not. Subscribers are annoyed about limits.
1.5 out of 5; 7% five-star, 81% one-star. Complaints: it "struggles to maintain context, constantly forgets previous prompts" and "silently summarizes conversations without warning users." Another: it "will hallucinate, make up data or statistics, and confidently proclaim that it researched something when it didn't."
Split. Praise: "It's fucking insanely good," and others on the introductory $2 / $10 price. Doubt: "Unfortunately it's not actually released yet to mere mortals," and "I'll wait for hands on before getting too hyped that Google is back." One commenter called Gemini "so far behind that it is effectively useless compared to Claude."
Reports that new five-hour windows and reduced Pro and Ultra limits led subscribers to hit caps faster: one subscriber used 50% of a monthly allowance in five prompts, many cancelled, and not all users got the email about the change. No Google statement was in the article.

Flash for daily use, Pro for hard questions, and Argon waiting in the wings.
Google's own plan page, read today, lists 3.6 Flash as the Free-tier model and 3.1 Pro as the more capable option with varying access. Since then Google says it shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash (Sept 2) with better reasoning and coding at the same speed and low cost as 3.7 Flash. I could not confirm from the app page which Flash version is the current default for every user, so check the model drop-down. A Gemini 3.5 Pro was announced at I/O in May; press coverage through late September says it still had not shipped, and Google's last official line was "as soon as it's ready" (single-outlet reporting, not a Google page I could read). On Sept 30 Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, a frontier model with a 1M-token output limit, rolling out first to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program. Google says it will expand to developers, enterprises and consumers "as soon as possible", with introductory pricing of $2 per million input and $10 per million output tokens.
| Model | Where it stands today | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6 Flash | Free-tier model named on the plan page; rolled out to all app users Jul 21 | Plan page, release notes |
| 3.1 Pro | Pro-class model with varying access by plan | Plan page |
| 3.8 Flash | Released Sep 2; API $0.75 / $3.75 per 1M tokens through Dec 31, then $1.50 / $7.50 | Google blog, API pricing page |
| 3.5 Pro | Announced May 19; reported still unreleased in late September | Press (single-source) |
| 4 Argon | Announced Sep 30; trusted cyber defenders only; intro $2 / $10 per 1M tokens | Google blog |
Deep Research is the feature I would test first. Google describes it as analysing hundreds of sources and producing a report in minutes, and it is available even on Free. Google's engineers walk through how it works in the official roundtable below.
- Deep Research is available on every tier, including Free, per Google's plan page.
- The Argon announcement is unusually specific about safeguards (misuse, prompt injection, misalignment monitoring).
- A new Flash model every few weeks keeps the cheap tier improving.
- Argon is not usable by ordinary subscribers yet; do not pay for Ultra expecting it.
- "Varying access to 3.1 Pro" on Free means the best model is rationed, so test on your own tasks.
Google engineers explain how Deep Research works. This video is embedded on Google's own Deep Research page and supports the section above.

Talk or type, let Gemini pull from your Google data, then check what it says.
Two workflow facts matter. Since I/O, Gemini Live sits inside the chat window, and in September Google added more natural voice models (3.8 Live) across Gemini Live, Search Live and Workspace. And Google's own page says limits depend on "the complexity of your prompt, the features you use, and the length of your chat", so long chats with heavy features burn limits fastest. Starting a fresh chat for a new task is the cheapest habit you can build.
From assistant to agent: Spark runs tasks on your behalf, but only on the top plan.
Google introduced Gemini Spark on May 19 as a 24/7 personal agent that works on tasks for you, including across Google Workspace. It began as a beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over in the US, and on June 30 it came to the macOS app, where it can organise folders and build documents from local files. Separately, Google's plan page lists Chrome auto browse on AI Pro and AI Ultra, so a lighter browser agent is available at $19.99. Developers get Jules (an asynchronous coding agent, in beta) and entry access to Antigravity on Pro; the JAVIS Gemini CLI review covers Google's terminal agent.
- Recurring chores: organising files, summarising your inbox, assembling documents from local data.
- Chrome auto browse on Pro means you can try browser automation without paying for Ultra.
- Spark is new, gated to Ultra, and I have not hands-on tested it; independent coverage is early.
- An agent with Workspace and local-file access is a much bigger permission surface than a chat box. Grant app access one app at a time.
Gmail, Drive, Chrome and Android first; third-party apps are arriving fast.
Gemini connects directly to Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and other Google apps, and Daily Brief and Personal Intelligence draw on them. In September Google added more third-party connected apps, including Airtable, Linear, monday.com, PandaDoc, Adobe, Picsart, Squarespace, Webflow, Peloton, SeatGeek and Experian; you turn them on in Gemini settings. On Sept 30 Google also began rolling out skills in chat: reusable instructions that Gemini can build from your chats and run automatically. Google says skills will "soon replace Gems" and that existing Gems will be migrated automatically. If you rely on Gems, expect a change.
| Integration | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail, Docs, Vids, Drive | Gemini inside Google apps; Plus and above | Plan page |
| Connected apps (Airtable, Linear, monday.com, Adobe...) | Use third-party apps without leaving Gemini | Google blog, Sept 2026 |
| Gemini in Chrome (auto browse) | Browser agent on Pro and Ultra | Plan page |
| Skills (replacing Gems) | Reusable instructions, stackable | Release notes, Sep 30 |
| Windows and macOS apps | Alt+Space summon, Fn dictation (macOS) | Release notes |
The API has a free tier that trains on your data, and introductory Flash prices double on Jan 1.
| What you're doing | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Using the Gemini app | Free, or $4.99 / $19.99 / $99.99-$199.99 per month |
| Going past plan limits | Buy AI credits to extend limits (Google plan page) |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash API, paid, standard | $0.75 input / $3.75 output per 1M tokens through Dec 31, 2026; $1.50 / $7.50 from Jan 1, 2027 |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash API, batch | $0.375 / $1.875 through Dec 31, 2026; $0.75 / $3.75 after |
| API free tier | Free of charge; "Used to improve our products: Yes" |
| Search grounding | 5,000 free requests a month, then $14 per 1,000 |
| Gemini 4 Argon (intro) | $2 / $10 per 1M tokens, cached input 95% off (Google, announced) |
Chat activity is saved and used for training by default; you have to turn it off.
| Control | What's in place (Gemini Apps help, read Oct 3) |
|---|---|
| Keep Activity (default) | Auto-deletes after 18 months by default; adjustable to 3 or 36 months or off |
| Training | If Keep Activity is on, chats are used to train Google's models; off stops that for future chats |
| Human review | A subset of chats is reviewed by humans; reviewed chats retained up to three years, disconnected from your account |
| Temporary chats | Not used for training; kept 72 hours for responses and safety |
| Age limits | Google AI plans and Gemini in Gmail/Docs are 18+ |
| Frontier safety | Argon: misuse defences, prompt-injection testing, chain-of-thought monitoring, hardened sandboxes (Google blog) |
Turn off Keep Activity before you paste anything sensitive, and remember human review applies to a subset of chats while it is on. I did not verify Gemini Enterprise's business-data terms in detail, so treat that column as a pointer, not a claim.
Best for people already inside Google's ecosystem; weaker for people who want predictable limits.
| Situation | Why Gemini fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Student | Free year of AI Pro in the US, Notebook study tools, flashcards, quizzes | Free, student AI Pro |
| Gmail / Docs power user | Gemini inside Workspace apps, plus 5 TB | AI Pro |
| Android or Windows user | Gemini Intelligence on Android, Alt+Space on Windows | Free to AI Pro |
| Creator making video and music | Omni, Lyria 3.5, Flow credits | AI Pro or Ultra |
| Researcher | Deep Research on every plan, 1M-token context | Free, then AI Pro |
| Developer | API, AI Studio, Jules, Antigravity, Gemini CLI | API; AI Pro for Jules |
Four real gaps, not manufactured ones.
Google says limits are compute-based and refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap. Android Authority reported in May that Pro and Ultra limits shrank and some users got no notice. You cannot see your remaining quota in advance.
Trustpilot reviewers and G2/Capterra reviewers alike cite confident wrong answers and the app forgetting earlier prompts. Verify anything you will act on.
Argon is limited to cyber defenders, and a 3.5 Pro announced in May was reported still unreleased in late September. The Free tier gets "varying access" to 3.1 Pro.
Chats are saved and used for training unless you turn Keep Activity off, and some are human-reviewed. The API free tier trains on your data too.
Gemini is the Google-native generalist. Others win on one thing.

Questions people are actually searching right now
How much does Google Gemini cost?
The app is free. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, AI Pro $19.99, and AI Ultra starts at $99.99 (5x Pro limits) with a $199.99 tier (20x). US prices from Google's plan page, Oct 3, 2026.
Is Gemini free?
Yes. Free includes Gemini 3.6 Flash, varying access to 3.1 Pro, Deep Research, Live, Canvas and image generation, with usage limits.
What is Gemini 4 Argon?
Google's new frontier model, announced Sept 30, 2026, with a 1M-token output limit. It is rolling out first to trusted cyber defenders and is not yet available to ordinary Gemini subscribers.
What is Gemini Spark?
A 24/7 personal AI agent launched May 19, 2026, available to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18+ in supported countries, including a macOS version.
Are Gems going away?
Google said on Sept 30 that skills will soon replace Gems and that existing Gems will be migrated automatically.
Does Gemini train on my chats?
If Keep Activity is on (the default), yes, and a subset of chats is human-reviewed. Turn Keep Activity off or use temporary chats to stop training use.
Why do I hit Gemini limits so fast?
Limits are compute-based and depend on prompt complexity, features and chat length, refreshing every five hours up to a weekly cap. You can buy AI credits to extend them.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
It depends on your tools. Gemini wins on Google-app integration and bundled storage; ChatGPT covers more built-in features. See the JAVIS ChatGPT review.
