Midjourney Review 2026: Still the Most Distinctive AI Image Maker — With No Free Plan, No API and a 1.7 Trustpilot Score
Midjourney began as a Discord bot in 2022 and, four years later, it is still a small self-funded company that makes images people recognise across the room. This week the default model is V8.2, an Edit model lets you change an image by describing the change, and the alpha site is previewing styles before you spend a minute of GPU time. None of that is the whole story: there is still no free plan and no official API, privacy only starts at $60 a month, a Trustpilot record of 1.7 out of 5 is full of ban-and-refund complaints, and Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. are suing over how the model was trained. This review checks what is true today against Midjourney's own docs, terms and update posts, independent reporting and real user sentiment — not the gallery.

| Free tier | None — four paid plans only |
| Cheapest paid plan | $10/mo (Basic, 3.3 Fast GPU hours) |
| Current default model | V8.2 (since Jul 24, 2026) |
| Official API | None in the help center |
| Trustpilot record | 1.7/5, 373 reviews — billing, bans, support |
Midjourney still makes the most distinctive pictures in the category. It also asks you to accept the strictest terms, the thinnest tooling and the least explanation.
"This is the strange part of reviewing Midjourney in late 2026: the product is better than it has ever been — V8.2 shipped in July, an Edit model arrived in August, and the web app finally does most of what Discord did — and yet the company still has no free plan, no official API, no seat management, a public-by-default gallery, and a Trustpilot score that sits at 1.7 out of 5. Everything good about it is on the image. Everything frustrating is around the image."
I would still pick it first if the output has to look like something rather than look correct. I would not pick it if I needed to automate generation, keep client work private on a budget, put a team on one invoice, or get fast, careful support when a payment goes wrong. Those are not edge cases; they are the most common reasons people write one-star reviews. The rest of this review is about knowing which side of that line you are on before you pay $10 to find out.
One subscription, one model family, two interfaces — and a lot of controls hidden behind a prompt bar.
Midjourney is a text-to-image and image-to-video service run by a small, self-funded company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. You use it two ways: the midjourney.com web app (with an experimental alpha.midjourney.com where new interface ideas land first) or the original Discord bot. As of this check, the current default image model is V8.2, released July 24, 2026. Around it sit an Edit model (instruction-based editing and up to four reference images), Draft mode for cheap exploration, Personalization and Moodboards for training a taste profile, style references, a canvas Editor, and a short-clip video model that animates a still.
Worth saying up front: unlike several products JAVIS has reviewed this year, Midjourney has not been acquired, has not taken venture money, and does not run a developer platform. What you see is what there is — one web app, one Discord bot, one subscription.
A bootstrapped category pioneer that is now suing, being sued, licensing to Meta — and building hardware.
Released Jul 24, 2026; V8.1 was default Jun 11 to Jul 23.

G2 admires the pictures. Trustpilot is furious about everything else.
1.7 out of 5, with 76% of reviews at one star and 10% at five. Complaint themes: distorted images and weak prompt comprehension, confusing or buggy interfaces, unresponsive support, unexpected account bans and inflexible refunds. A representative review: "It doesn't understand any of my prompts. Even simple prompts like keeping the camera angle fail consistently."
G2 averages roughly 4.4/5 with praise for striking images and ease of use, plus a wish for something less cluttered than Discord. The independent aiworthit review reaches the same split: "distinctive, painterly, best-in-class" output, but no free plan, privacy only from $60, and text that is "still not reliable enough for images that depend on accurate typography".
A long-time user says the new versions are "technically superior and far more obedient, but they surprise me less." A Medium write-up of r/midjourney reaction describes a split: product, architecture and brand users praise V8's text and anatomy; concept-art and mood-driven users call it flatter than V7. (Secondhand; JAVIS did not read the threads directly.)
Four paid tiers, no free plan, and you are buying GPU minutes rather than images.

Two terms that catch people out. First, refunds: you are only eligible if you have used under 20 GPU minutes across the lifetime of the account, and the option appears when you cancel (help center, updated Sep 17, 2026). Second, groups: Midjourney offers no organization discounts, no seat management and no admin controls; bulk billing is only discussed for 50 or more yearly Pro or Mega plans.
Your answer depends on privacy, company size and whether you need automation.
Basic, $10 — but expect to burn 200 minutes fast. There is no trial on the web or Discord (a limited one exists in the niji · journey app).
Standard, $30 — unlimited Relax images is the feature that makes the economics work.
Pro, $60 — Stealth Mode starts here. Even then, anything made in public Discord channels stays visible.
Pro or Mega is mandatory to own your assets commercially (Terms of Service, section 4).
Midjourney is the wrong tool today. Read the Alternatives section.
Compare Ideogram first — typography is its whole pitch.
The part that changed this year: you can now instruct an image instead of re-rolling it.
The headline feature this year is not a prettier V8.2 — it is that Midjourney finally lets you talk to an image. The Edit model, opened to everyone for testing on Aug 27, 2026, does three things: it changes an existing image from written instructions, it generates new images from up to four reference images, and it powers inpainting and outpainting in the Editor. Midjourney's own docs say it replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference and the Retexture tool. It works with V8.1 and V8.2, and with image prompts, style references, moodboards, Personalization and --hd; it does not yet work with --tile or with Remix.
The underlying V8 family is a rebuild: V8 alpha landed Mar 17, 2026, V8.1 on Apr 14 (standard jobs about 4-5 times faster than earlier versions, with native 2K "HD" output), and V8.2 on Jul 24 with a focus on aesthetics, image quality and Personalization. HD costs 1.3 GPU minutes against 0.8 for SD, and Midjourney notes that inpainting or outpainting an HD image downscales the result to SD until you upscale it again.

| Version | Released | What changed (per Midjourney docs/blog) |
|---|---|---|
| V7 | Apr 2025 | Draft mode in a 4-image form; Omni Reference (2-minute GPU cost per prompt). |
| V8 alpha | Mar 17, 2026 | Early-access alpha on the alpha site; retired from use Jul 24, 2026. |
| V8.1 | Apr 14, 2026; default Jun 11 | 4-5x faster standard jobs, 2K HD, better prompt reading, Raw mode for more prompt adherence. |
| V8.2 | Jul 24, 2026 (default) | Aesthetics, fewer low-quality outliers, better Personalization; first Edit model Aug 27. |
Midjourney's own demo of exactly the feature described above.
Published by the official "Midjourney" YouTube channel (youtube.com/@Midjourney).
- Instruction editing ("make this girl into a real character") lowers the skill floor compared with prompt-engineering a whole new image.
- Four-reference generation is a real replacement for Omni/Character Reference, not a rename.
- All of it is documented with GPU costs: Edit costs 1 minute (SD) or 2.3 minutes (HD) per prompt.
- Midjourney calls the Edit model a test with "a lot of edge cases". Expect misfires.
- No Remix and no
--tilewith Edit results yet. - HD edits downscale to SD when you inpaint or outpaint them.
Explore cheap, commit once, edit by instruction — the review step is where the minutes go.
The Draft-to-commit loop is the habit worth building. A Draft prompt costs 0.4 GPU minutes and returns a big batch; once something is right, "Rerun as HD" or Vary/Remix spends the real minutes on the one image that deserves them. Used that way, Basic's 200 minutes goes much further than the raw number suggests. Used the old way — four HD grids per idea — it disappears in an afternoon.
Five-second clips from a still, and no official way to automate anything.
Midjourney's video model is an image-to-video tool, not a text-to-video studio. You start from a still — one you made or one you upload — add an optional prompt and choose low motion (default; more likely to give still scenes and subtle movement) or high motion (bigger camera moves, but "may also create unrealistic or glitchy movements" in Midjourney's own words). Clips start at 5 seconds; each Extend adds 4 seconds, up to four times, for a 21-second maximum. Videos are 480p SD by default, with 720p HD on Standard and above.
| Video job (batch size default = 4) | GPU minutes | Who can run it |
|---|---|---|
| Batch of 4, SD | 8 min (4 min for 2, 2 min for 1) | All plans (Fast); Relax SD on Pro and Mega only |
| Batch of 4, HD (720p) | 26 min (13 min for 2, 7 min for 1) | Standard, Pro, Mega; Fast only |
| Extend (+4 s) | Same as a new generation | Same limits |
| Maximum length | 21 seconds (5 s + 4 extensions) | All |
Automation and "browser" workflows: there is nothing official to point at. The help center documents the web app and Discord commands (/imagine, --stealth, --edit, --video) but not a way to drive Midjourney from code, a schedule or another agent. The alpha team's Oct 2 changelog says "new collaborative tools" are coming the following week, which is the closest thing to a roadmap signal. JAVIS did not verify those tools because they had not shipped on the day of this check.
No API, no MCP server, no connectors — Midjourney is the walled garden of the category.
This is the section where Midjourney is honest about being a closed product. Across the 105 articles in the official help center index as of Oct 3, 2026, there is no API documentation, no webhooks, no SDK and no connector listing. Third-party roundups dated as recently as Aug 18, 2026 say the same: Midjourney has said an API is "on the roadmap" without a date, and the unofficial wrappers that sell you "Midjourney API" access work by driving a Discord account, which runs into the Terms of Service line "You may not use automated tools to access, interact with, or generate Assets through the Services" — and Midjourney reserves the right to suspend or ban access at any time and for any reason.
| Need | Official path today | Reality check |
|---|---|---|
| Generate from a script or agent | None | Use a vendor with an API (see Alternatives); unofficial wrappers risk bans |
| Team workspace, seats, admin | None | One user per account; no group plans or seat management (help center) |
| Share with a client | Public gallery or manual download | Stealth Mode (Pro+) keeps work off the public site |
| Verify a file came from Midjourney | midjourney.com/verify | Free; looks for a hidden ID tag that screenshots and most social sites strip |
GPU minutes are the currency; Relax mode is the real product on Standard and above.
Since you pay in GPU minutes, the only honest way to price Midjourney is per prompt. These figures use Midjourney's own published costs (SD 0.8 min, HD 1.3 min, Draft 0.4 min, Edit 1 min SD / 2.3 min HD) and simple division. They show how many prompts each plan's Fast time buys. They are arithmetic, not a benchmark; aspect ratio, upscales and Relax mode all change the real numbers.
| Plan | Fast minutes / month | SD prompts (0.8 min) | HD prompts (1.3 min) | Edit prompts, SD (1 min) | SD video batches (8 min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic ($10) | 200 | 250 | 153 | 200 | 25 |
| Standard ($30) | 900 | 1,125 | 692 | 900 | 112 |
| Pro ($60) | 1,800 | 2,250 | 1,384 | 1,800 | 225 |
| Mega ($120) | 3,600 | 4,500 | 2,769 | 3,600 | 450 |
At Midjourney's own $4 per extra hour, one SD prompt costs about 5 cents and one HD prompt about 9 cents of top-up time. That is the real marginal price once your plan's minutes are gone, and the reason Relax mode (waits of 0 to 30 minutes) is the thing Standard actually sells.
Public by default, private from $60, owned by you — with a studio lawsuit in the background.
| Control | What the official terms and docs say |
|---|---|
| Default visibility | "By default, Your Content is publicly viewable and remixable" (Terms of Service, section 4). Midjourney calls itself an open community. |
| Privacy | Stealth Mode is Pro and Mega only. Creations made in public Discord channels remain visible even with Stealth on; use the web Create page, DMs or a private server. |
| Ownership | You own the Assets you create, even after cancelling. If you upscale someone else's image, it stays theirs. |
| $1M rule | A company, or an employee of a company, with more than $1,000,000 USD annual revenue must subscribe to Pro or Mega to own its Assets. |
| License back to Midjourney | You grant Midjourney a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable, royalty-free, irrevocable license to your inputs and Assets; it survives termination. |
| Disputes | Binding arbitration (AAA ICDR, Santa Clara County, California) with a jury-trial waiver. |
| Moderation | Bans can happen without refund; refunds only if under 20 GPU minutes ever used. Blocked jobs cost no GPU time. |
| Provenance | Every image carries a hidden ID tag; midjourney.com/verify checks it. A public EU training-content summary (v1, Mar 17, 2026) is published. |
Worth separating three things: Midjourney's terms are clear and consistent — you own what you make, they can use it, and it is public unless you pay for Stealth. The litigation is real but unresolved; none of the studio claims has been adjudicated. And the practical risk for a working user is usually not copyright at all, it is an account suspension with no refund and a support process that, per Trustpilot, many users find opaque.
Best for people who sell the look of the image, not people who need to automate it or keep it quiet cheaply.
| Situation | Why Midjourney fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Concept artist or art director exploring looks | Distinctive aesthetics, Personalization, moodboards, srefs | Standard |
| Brand designer who needs final, correct text | Text is better in V8.x but still not dependable for typography-critical work | Probably not; see Ideogram |
| Agency with confidential client work | Stealth Mode and Pro/Mega required if the company grosses over $1M | Pro |
| Developer who needs generation inside an app | No official API | Not Midjourney |
| Hobbyist who wants to try it for a month | Cheapest entry is $10, with no free tier | Basic |

Four real gaps, not manufactured ones.
The cheapest way in is $10, the official help center has no API article, and each account is one user. Schools, nonprofits and companies get no organization discounts.
Everything is public and remixable by default. Stealth Mode starts at Pro, and even then public Discord channels leak work.
Trustpilot sits at 1.7/5 across 373 reviews, dominated by bans without recourse, strict refunds (under 20 GPU minutes ever used) and slow replies.
V8.x improved text, but independent reviewers say it is not reliable for typography. Some long-time users also say V8 trades surprise for obedience.
Midjourney is the aesthetic choice, not the cheapest, most open or most automatable one.

Questions people are actually searching right now
Is there a free Midjourney plan?
No. The official plan comparison lists four paid tiers: Basic $10, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120 per month, with 20% off for annual billing. Checked Oct 3, 2026.
What is the current Midjourney model?
V8.2, released as the default on July 24, 2026. V8.1 (Apr 14, default Jun 11 to Jul 23) and an Edit model (Aug 27) came before it.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?
Yes. You own the Assets you create, even after cancelling. The exception: a company with over $1,000,000 USD in annual revenue (or an employee of one) must be on Pro or Mega.
Are my Midjourney images private?
Not by default. Creations are public and remixable unless you use Stealth Mode, which requires Pro or Mega. Anything made in public Discord channels stays visible even with Stealth on.
Does Midjourney have an API?
Not an official one. The help center documents no API, and third-party roundups dated Aug 18, 2026 say Midjourney has promised one without a date. Unofficial wrappers risk account suspension.
Can Midjourney make video?
Yes, image-to-video: 5-second clips, extendable in 4-second steps up to 21 seconds, SD by default and HD on Standard and above. A batch of 4 SD videos costs 8 GPU minutes.
Can I get a refund?
Only if you have used under 20 GPU minutes in total across the account's lifetime. Accounts suspended for terms violations are not eligible.
Is Midjourney being sued?
Yes. Disney and Universal (June 2025) and Warner Bros. Discovery (September 2025) have filed copyright suits; artists filed earlier class actions. Midjourney argues fair use. No dispositive ruling had been reported as of this check.
