ChatGPT Review 2026: Six Plans, Three Pro Tiers, and a Model Lineup That Changed Four Times This Quarter
Correction, Oct 3, 2026: an earlier version said the Pro 500 multiplier (about 25x Plus) came only from press coverage. OpenAI's own DevDay recap states it: Pro 500 offers “25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance”.
ChatGPT is still the default AI assistant for most people: OpenAI said at DevDay on Sept 29 that about 1.2 billion people now use it every week. But the product you would sign up for today is not the one most reviews describe. In the last eight weeks OpenAI made GPT-5.6 Luna the free default, launched GPT-6 Astra (Sept 3), added a $100 Pro tier, paused and reopened the $200 one with a smaller allowance for new buyers, and on Sept 29 introduced a $500 Pro 500 plan. Meanwhile its Trustpilot score sits at 1.6 out of 5, mostly about limits and reliability. This review checks what is true today against OpenAI's own pricing page, help center and release notes, then adds what real users say.
| Ownership | OpenAI, independent company |
| Free tier | Real -- unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna |
| Cheapest paid plan | $8/mo (Go, US; includes ads) |
| Weekly users (OpenAI, Sep 29) | ~1.2B |
| Trustpilot record | 1.6/5, 3,724 reviews |
Still the most complete AI assistant for a normal person. But the plan ladder is now confusing, and the newest model is the one you may not actually get in Chat.
"ChatGPT's real strength in 2026 is breadth: one app that chats, searches, reads your files, talks, makes images, runs deep research, builds small sites, and now hands long jobs to always-on agents called dots. No rival I have checked covers that many bases in one subscription. The weakness is the same thing seen from the other side. OpenAI changes models, limits and plans so often that two people paying the same $20 can have a different experience from one month to the next, and the loudest complaints in 2026 are about usage limits, not intelligence."
My honest read: the Free plan is genuinely generous now (unlimited text chats), Plus at $20 is the sensible default for anyone who uses it daily, and the Pro tiers only make sense if you live inside Codex or ChatGPT Work. Read the limits section before you pay for any tier above Plus, because the most expensive plans are exactly where allowances have just been rewritten.
One assistant, two modes (Chat and Work), plus Codex, voice, images, research and agents.
As of this check ChatGPT is organised around Chat (everyday conversation, search, files, voice), ChatGPT Work (an agentic mode that creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations and uses connected apps), Codex (coding agent, also reviewed separately by JAVIS), Deep research, Images, Sites and Space (build and publish small sites; collaborative Pages), Plugins (connected apps that are replacing custom GPTs), and dots, the always-on agents announced at DevDay on Sept 29. Everything runs on the GPT-5.6 family (Luna, Terra, Sol) and GPT-6 models (Astra, Sol, Luna), with the exact mix depending on your plan.
One piece of context up front: OpenAI is not owned by anyone else. It raised $122 billion at an $852 billion post-money valuation on March 31, 2026, anchored by Amazon, NVIDIA and SoftBank with Microsoft still participating, per OpenAI's own announcement.
The biggest consumer AI product by a wide margin, but its share of the category has been shrinking.
DevDay recap, Sep 29, 2026. Was "1 billion" on Aug 6 and "900M+" on Mar 31. Users, not subscribers.
As of OpenAI's Mar 31, 2026 funding post. No newer official figure found.
Closed Mar 31, 2026; post-money valuation. Later talks about ~$1.4T are reports, not closed.
OpenAI's own Mar 31 figure; later run-rate numbers online are third-party estimates.

Business reviewers rate it highly. Consumer reviewers on Trustpilot are angry about limits and reliability.
1.6 out of 5; 10% five-star, 74% one-star. Complaint: "it can lose track of work in the middle of the same conversation" (Aug 26). On limits: "£20 a month there shouldn't be any limit of usage" (Sep 29). Praise from the minority: "My day-to-day tasks became very very easy" (Sep 28).
Mixed. One user: "it's very expensive. After 15 message I burned through my 5 hour limits." Another found Astra's web research stronger: "it did about 3-5x number of web sources found" versus GPT-5.6 Sol. A third called it "just slower 5.6 but with better vision."
Plus subscribers asked why Astra, announced for "all ChatGPT Plus users", is only reachable through Work and Codex, not Chat. One wrote that new models are "smarter AND CHEAPER than GPT-5.6" yet unavailable in Chat for Plus. No OpenAI staff reply was visible in the thread when read.
Free, Go, Plus, three Pro tiers, Business and Enterprise -- and the top tiers are being re-priced as we speak.

| Enterprise | Custom | Admin-controlled | SAML SSO, SOC 2 audit, RBAC model access |
Pro 500 at 25x Plus is OpenAI's own figure: its DevDay recap says Pro 500 offers “25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance”. The other multipliers you will see quoted online (Pro 100 about 5x Plus, Pro 200 about 20x) come from press coverage of the plan changes; OpenAI's help article only says Pro 200 includes more than Pro 100 and Pro 500 the most. Treat those two as approximate.
Pick by how heavily you use it, and whether you code.
Free. Unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna is enough to judge it.
Go at $8, accepting possible ads and no Sol access.
Plus at $20. No ads, Sol, deep research, projects.
Pro 100, or Pro 200 if the lower new-subscriber allowance still covers you.
Pro 500 for Ultrafast, or Business Premium seats for a team.

GPT-5.6 for most chats, GPT-6 Astra for the hard jobs, and a different mix in Chat than in Work and Codex.
OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on Sept 3, calling it its most intelligent and aligned model and the first it rates Critical for cybersecurity capability under its Preparedness Framework. It then added GPT-6 Sol and Luna (Sept 22) and GPT-6.1 Sol (Sept 29). The catch for ordinary users is where each appears. Per OpenAI's help center, in Chat Free and Go run GPT-5.6 Luna, Plus and Pro run GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium, High and (Pro and above) Extra High thinking, and Astra shows up as GPT-6 Pro on Pro 100, Pro 200, Business and Enterprise. Plus gets Astra in Work and Codex only, and GPT-6.1 Sol is "not yet available in Chat" at launch. OpenAI also retired automatic switching from Instant to Thinking for Plus and Pro on Sept 14, so you now pick the thinking level yourself.
| Where | Free / Go | Plus | Pro 100 / 200 / 500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat default | GPT-5.6 Luna | GPT-5.6 Sol | GPT-5.6 Sol |
| Thinking levels | "Think" button (Luna) | Medium, High | Medium, High, Extra High, Pro |
| GPT-6 Astra in Chat | No | No | Yes, as GPT-6 Pro (weekly cap) |
| Astra in Work / Codex | No (Codex has Terra) | Yes | Yes; Ultrafast on Pro 500 only |
| API list price, Astra | $10 per 1M input tokens, $50 per 1M output (OpenAI, Sep 3); billed separately from any ChatGPT plan | ||
- OpenAI's own safety overview is unusually blunt that Astra reaches its Critical cyber threshold, and describes tighter protections.
- A Hacker News user found Astra's research searches turned up several times more sources than Sol on the same prompt.
- Free users now get a current model with unlimited text chats.
- Benchmark claims on the Astra page (for example 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4) are OpenAI's own and I did not rerun them.
- Astra costs more per message than Sol: early users on Plus report burning a five-hour allowance in minutes (see Limits).
Ask, let it search or reason, then check the answer yourself -- that last step is not optional.
Two workflow changes matter in practice. First, Plus and Pro no longer auto-escalate to deeper thinking, so "think harder" in a prompt will not change the level. Second, Free and Go chats use Luna even when you press Think. If a task is important, choose the level yourself and ask for sources.

The new direction: agents that keep working after you close the tab.
OpenAI introduced dots on Sept 29: always-on agents in ChatGPT, powered by GPT-6 Astra, that have their own cloud computer, take a goal, use the apps you connect, and bring results back for review. They are rolling out gradually to eligible Pro and Business Premium users aged 18 and over; Pro access excludes the EEA, Switzerland and the UK at launch, and Enterprise is an off-by-default beta. For the first month dots usage does not count against plan allowances, and OpenAI says it will publish usage terms afterward. ChatGPT Work handles documents, spreadsheets and presentations with connected apps and now supports Voice. Codex (see the JAVIS OpenAI Codex review) now runs in the cloud so tasks continue while your laptop sleeps.
- Long, recurring jobs: monitoring a channel, preparing a weekly summary, scanning a repo on a schedule.
- Automations can start from connected-app events through MCP, per the Sept 29 release notes.
- Dots are new and gated to the most expensive plans; I have not hands-on tested them.
- An always-on agent with app access is a higher-permission surface than a chat window. Define what it may do alone before connecting anything.
Custom GPTs are being retired in favour of plugins, and plugins can react to events.
On Sept 11 OpenAI said it plans to retire custom GPTs across plans and migrate them to plugins, which combine reusable instructions with connected apps; existing GPTs keep working until the retirement date that applies to you, and no date was stated. Plugins can now carry interactive panels and viewers, you can connect multiple accounts to one plugin, and supported plugins can use MCP events to trigger automations. ChatGPT also added Box, Dropbox and SharePoint to Library (Sept 10) and ChatGPT for Word alongside Excel and PowerPoint (Sept 17). If your workflow depends on a custom GPT, plan the migration now.
| Integration | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Plugins (replacing GPTs) | Reusable instructions plus connected apps; interactive panels; multi-account | ChatGPT release notes, Sep 11 and 17 |
| MCP-triggered automations | Start an automation when something changes in a connected app | Release notes, Sep 29 |
| Library: Drive, Box, Dropbox, SharePoint | Browse and attach files without re-uploading | Release notes, Sep 10 |
| Office add-ins | ChatGPT in Word, Excel, PowerPoint (all plans, shared allowance) | Release notes, Sep 17 |
| Slack and Teams | ChatGPT inside team chat | chatgpt.com/features |
Your subscription and the API are separate meters, and credits sit on top of both.
| What you're doing | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Chatting on Free | $0, unlimited text chats on Luna (abuse guardrails) |
| Chatting on Plus | $20/mo; API usage not included |
| Going past a plan allowance in Codex / Work | Buy credits; included allowance is used first. Credits do not extend every model or feature |
| Astra Fast mode vs Standard (Pro plans) | Fast uses allowance 2.5x; Astra Ultrafast uses it 8x |
| GPT-6 Astra API | $10 / 1M input, $50 / 1M output tokens |
| GPT-6.1 Sol API | $2 / 1M input, $0.10 cached, $10 / 1M output |
| Business seats | $20-25 Standard, $100-125 Premium per user per month; shared workspace credits optional |
Training on consumer chats is on by default; business plans are the opposite.
| Control | What's in place |
|---|---|
| Training on your chats (personal plans) | "Improve the model for everyone" can be turned off in Settings > Data controls; it also applies to personal Codex tasks |
| Temporary chat | Not in history, no memory, not used for training; may be kept up to 30 days for safety |
| Business / Enterprise data | Not used for training by default (OpenAI Business FAQ and enterprise-privacy page) |
| Enterprise controls | SAML SSO, fine-grained access, a completed SOC 2 audit, AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit |
| Ads | Free and Go only; not on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu; chats not shared with advertisers |
| Account security | Security history page added Sep 25; Privacy Center added Sep 21 |
On that last point: The Hacker News reported on Sept 29 that OpenAI cancelled a planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra after internal evaluations showed more deception and out-of-scope actions than its predecessor, quoting OpenAI's head of safety systems. I found that in one outlet and did not see an OpenAI post confirming it, so treat it as reported. It is relevant mainly because it shows the safety bar is actively gating releases.
Best for people who want one general assistant for everything; weaker for people who need guaranteed, predictable allowances.
| Situation | Why ChatGPT fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Student or casual user | Free tier plus Study mode and flashcards (all plans) | Free, then Go |
| Knowledge worker, writer, analyst | Sol, deep research, projects, Office add-ins, no ads | Plus |
| Developer using Codex daily | Codex cloud, code review, Astra in Codex | Plus, then Pro 100 / 200 |
| Researcher with long, hard questions | GPT-6 Pro (Astra), max deep research | Pro 100 or 200 |
| Small team | Shared workspace, admin controls, no training by default | Business Standard / Premium |
| Someone who wants cited web answers above all | Not its sharpest edge; compare Perplexity | Free to test, then decide |
Four real gaps, not manufactured ones.
Plus users on Reddit, X and OpenAI's forum report exhausting a five-hour window in minutes with Astra. One Hacker News user said 15 messages used his limit. Press coverage reports published Plus limits of 5-45 Astra messages per five hours versus 10-100 for Sol; I could not confirm that figure on OpenAI's own page.
Plus gets Astra only in Work and Codex, and GPT-6.1 Sol is not yet in Chat. The announcement language said "all Plus users", and the forum thread shows people felt misled.
Pro 200 was paused Sept 10, reopened Sept 29 with a lower allowance for new buyers, and existing subscribers move to the lower allowance after Oct 29. The price stays at $200.
Free and Go can show ads below answers. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers. Separately, custom GPTs are slated for retirement in favour of plugins, with no date given.
