Descript Review 2026: Edit Video Like a Document, Pay in Media Minutes and AI Credits, and Let Claude Drive the Timeline
Descript is the odd one out among AI productivity tools: not a notetaker but an editor where the transcript is the timeline. This review checks what is true today against Descript's own pricing page and help center: Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually, Creator is $24, every plan runs on media minutes and AI credits that do not roll over, Underlord is the AI co-editor, and since April its API and MCP server let Claude edit for you. Then it adds what real users say, which is a 2.6 on Trustpilot and a 4.6 on G2.

| Ownership | Independent private company |
| Free tier | Real -- 60 media min, 100 credits once |
| Cheapest paid plan | $16/mo (Hobbyist, annual) |
| Creators and teams (Descript-stated) | 6 million+ |
| Trustpilot record | 2.6/5, 290 reviews |
Still the clearest idea in video and podcast editing: edit the words and the media follows. In 2026 it is also a credit-metered AI editor, and the meter is where the complaints are.
"Descript is not an AI notetaker, and it is the odd one out next to the meeting notetakers for that reason. It is an editor where the transcript is the timeline. Underlord, its AI co-editor, now does the first 90% of a cut from a prompt, and since April it can be driven from Claude through MCP. The cost model changed with it: media minutes for what you bring in, AI credits for what the AI does, neither rolling over. The people who love it call it the fastest way to edit talking-head video. The people on Trustpilot mostly talk about credits burning, crashes and cancelling."
My honest read: if your work is dialogue-led (podcasts, interviews, courses, talking-head marketing video), Descript is still the most natural editor for it, and the Free plan is a fair test. If you do music-led, cinematic or colour-graded work, or you need rock-solid renders at volume, test before you commit. This is a VERIFIED EDITORIAL REVIEW: Descript's pricing page, security page, help center, changelog, API page and YouTube channel checked on Oct 3, 2026, plus published user sentiment. I did not run a controlled hands-on test.
One editor, built around the transcript, with an AI co-editor on top.
Open a project in Descript and you see a document. Every word you said is a word on the page. Delete a "um" and it is gone from the audio and video; rearrange a paragraph and the clips reorder. That is the text-based editing idea, and everything else hangs off it: Underlord, the AI co-editor you talk to in plain English; AI polish tools (Studio Sound, Eye Contact, Green Screen); AI speech with voice clones; translation and dubbing; Rooms for remote recording; and a newer API and MCP layer.

Ownership: Descript is a private company. Press and Tracxn say founder Andrew Mason moved to executive chairman and Laura Burkhauser, formerly head of product, became CEO in 2025. I found no acquisition of Descript. Descript itself bought SquadCast (the basis of Rooms) and Lyrebird (voice) in earlier years, per Tracxn.
The reference name for text-based editing, with a pricing model that changed twice in a year.

Review sites that sample working teams rate it well. Trustpilot, where unhappy people gather, rates it poorly. Both agree on the cause.
2.6 out of 5; 37% five-star, 43% one-star. Reviews dated late Sept and Oct 2, 2026 describe the desktop app crashing during rendering, "burned through 800 credits just trying to clean up filler pauses...it kept deleting actual words", and a cancellation process the reviewer said did not work as documented. Praise: beginner-friendly editing and time-saving transcription.
Calls it "an excellent text-based audio and video editor at a fair price, as long as you pick the right plan". Notes the Free plan is 60 media minutes at 720p with a watermark, that most creators end up on Creator rather than Hobbyist, and that per-seat billing makes a team of three on Creator about $72 a month annually.
Says "render and publish reliability is the loudest complaint from teams at volume", that "credit consumption is not a fixed price list", and that Underlord v2 (Jan 2026) cut consumption by about 20%. Recommends it for dialogue-led work and not for music-led or colour-graded projects.

| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | Media minutes / mo | AI credits | Export | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 60 (1 hr) | 100 one-time | 720p, watermark | 5 GB |
| Hobbyist | $16 / mo | $24 / mo | 600 (10 hrs) | 400 / mo | 1080p | 100 GB |

| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Sized to team | Custom | 4K | Custom |
Arithmetic you can check: three Creator seats on annual billing is 3 x $24 = $72 a month; on monthly billing it is 3 x $35 = $105. Business annual for five seats is 5 x $50 = $250 a month.
Pick by what you edit, how long the files are and how much AI you will lean on.
Free: one project, 60 minutes, expect a watermark and 720p.
Creator: 30 media hours, 800 credits, 4K. Hobbyist is cheaper but limits AI.
Business: Brand Studio, 30+ dubbing languages, up to 5 seats.
Any paid plan, via the API/MCP (early access); it draws your credits and minutes.
Use a traditional editor; Descript can export a timeline to Premiere, Final Cut and others.
Enterprise, quoted.
The idea is unchanged and still the best in its class. The new part is the meter.
Text-based editing sounds like a gimmick until you try to cut a 90-minute interview. Descript transcribes the recording (25 languages on the pricing page), identifies speakers, and lets you delete, move and retime content by editing the document. Filler words, retakes and long gaps can be removed with one click or by asking Underlord. Studio Sound cleans noisy audio, Eye Contact adjusts gaze, Green Screen removes backgrounds, and Regenerate can repair an awkward word with your cloned voice.
The 2026 shift is that most of these now spend AI credits. Descript's help center says Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words are capped at 30 credits per file or tool application, but most other features scale with media length and model choice, and Underlord costs vary with model routing and task complexity; the exact cost appears in the Usage tab after each run. That is honest, and it is also why you cannot predict the bill from the plan page alone.

| Capability | Free | Hobbyist | Creator | Business |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Media minutes per month | 60 | 600 | 1,800 | 2,400 |
| AI credits | 100 one-time | 400 / mo | 800 / mo | 1,500 / mo |
| Underlord | Limited | Access | Full access | Full access |
| Video export | 720p, watermark | 1080p | 4K | 4K |
| Remote recording (Rooms) hours / mo | 2 | 5 | 15 | 25 |
| Upload size | 1 GB | 10 GB | 20 GB | 50 GB |
| Dubbing (audio translation) | Limited | Limited | Limited | 30 languages, with proofread |
| Seats | 1 | 1 | 1 to 3 | Up to 5 |
- Text-based editing really is faster for dialogue-led content, and independent reviewers agree.
- Timeline export to Premiere, Final Cut, Audition, Pro Tools, Logic, Samplitude and Reaper is listed on the pricing page.
- Voice-clone consent is built in: the speaker reads a consent script.
- Credit burn on long files and Underlord conversations; costs are non-deterministic.
- Desktop stability: crash complaints appear on Trustpilot and in an Aug 2026 review.
- Accuracy with strong regional accents, per one reviewer.
Import, edit as text, let Underlord do the grunt work, then watch the result.

The human-review step is non-negotiable here. Underlord is described by independent reviewers as strong at clean-up (fillers, captions) and weaker at creative judgement, and a Trustpilot reviewer said it deleted real words while cleaning up pauses. Treat its first pass as a draft you scrub through, not an export-ready cut.
Descript's own demo of recording and letting the AI handle the edit. It backs the Core Feature and Workflow sections above.

Underlord is Descript's agent: you describe the edit, it plans and does it.
Descript describes Underlord as having "judgment", "expertise" and "tirelessness": it can read a script, watch the video, decide what to do next, and redo things as often as you ask. It has a model picker, and recent updates added @-pinned context, persistent chat history and custom instructions so it can learn how you like to edit. In practice that means you can say "edit this down to two minutes, focusing on the part where I talked about pricing" and get a cut to review.
| Underlord can... | Spends | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Edit for clarity, remove filler words and retakes, shorten gaps | AI credits (Remove Filler Words capped at 30 per application) | Pricing page, help center |
| Create clips and highlights, draft show notes and social posts | AI credits | Pricing page feature list |
| Generate video, images and avatars from a prompt | AI credits (higher) | Creator and above for the latest video models |
| Regenerate and smooth speech | Per second of audio since Sept 17, 2026 (0.5 credits per second of audio) | Descript release roundup |
| Translate and dub | AI credits; dubbing in 30 languages, proofread on Business | Pricing page |
- First-pass cuts, clip finding and tidy-ups on dialogue-heavy files.
- Repeating the same style across episodes via custom instructions.
- Open-ended prompts on long files can burn credits fast; check the Usage tab after each run.
- AI edits can remove words you meant to keep.
Descript has an API and an MCP server that lets Claude drive an edit. Both are early access.
Descript released its API in open beta on April 16, 2026 and announced MCP connections for Claude and ChatGPT on May 14. Its API page says there are four ways in: Claude over MCP, Zapier, a command-line tool and direct HTTP. API and MCP access is included for paying subscribers, draws your media minutes and AI credits, and does not yet support direct media-file export; you export manually in the app. The directory connector in Claude does not support generative image or video tools, which need a custom MCP setup against the remote server at https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp.

| Integration | What it does | Plan / limit |
|---|---|---|
| Claude connector (MCP) | Import media, edit with Underlord, manage projects and publish from a Claude chat | Paid plans; uses media minutes and AI credits; no generative image or video via the directory connector |
| Custom MCP / any assistant | Connect other assistants to the remote MCP server | Early access; behaviour can change |
| Zapier | Trigger imports and edits from other apps | Paid plans; listed on Descript's API page |
| CLI and HTTP API | Scripted imports, edits, transcript and timeline export, share-page publishing | Open beta; direct media export not supported yet |
| Timeline export | Send the edit to Premiere, Final Cut, Audition, Pro Tools and Logic, Samplitude and Reaper | Listed on pricing page |

Think in media minutes and AI credits per project, not dollars per month.
| What you are doing | What you pay / hit |
|---|---|
| Trying one project | $0 on Free; 60 media minutes, 100 one-time credits, watermark |
| Weekly podcast, 60-minute recordings, 4 a month | 240 media minutes; fits Hobbyist (600) or Creator (1,800) |
| Same show, plus Underlord on every episode | Credits are the limit: 400 on Hobbyist, 800 on Creator; cost per run is shown in the Usage tab |
| Three-person team on Creator, annual | 3 x $24 = $72 a month; $105 on monthly billing |
| Running out mid-month | Buy a top-up (Creator and Business); unused minutes and credits expire monthly |
| Claude driving edits over MCP | Same pool: media minutes and AI credits, no extra fee |
| Regenerating audio (smoothing cuts) | Per second since Sept 17, 2026: 0.5 credits per second of audio |
Standard enterprise claims, plus a sharper-than-usual consent rule for voice clones.
| Control | What Descript says |
|---|---|
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type II (audited by a CPA firm); aligns with GDPR, CCPA and Privacy by Design |
| Encryption | AES-256 at rest; HTTPS with TLS 1.2 in transit |
| AI training | Does not train on your content by default; sharing transcripts to improve the service is opt-in and off by default |
| Voice clones | Only "Consenting Speakers" may be cloned; the speaker reads a Descript script affirming consent |
| Deletion | Deleted projects are removed from servers within 30 days; account deletion removes all data |
| Third-party AI | Security page lists Rev and Whisper (OpenAI) for transcription, Hedra for avatars, and Google Cloud and AWS for infrastructure |
| Enterprise | SSO, SCIM, audit logs, opt-out of training, custom retention, dedicated CSM |
Unlike the meeting notetakers JAVIS reviews, Descript does not send a bot into your calls, so the consent issue is different: it is about whose voice you clone and whose recordings you upload. I found no lawsuit against Descript comparable to those facing Otter and Fireflies. Descript Rooms records guests, so the usual guest-consent practice applies.
Best for creators and teams who edit talking and want to do it at the speed of a document.
| Situation | Why Descript fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Podcaster or interviewer | Edit the transcript, remove fillers, Studio Sound, Rooms for remote guests | Hobbyist or Creator |
| Course or tutorial creator | Screen recording, text-based editing, captions | Creator |
| Marketing team making talking-head video | Brand Studio, dubbing, clips, collaboration | Business |
| Anyone who wants Claude to run edits | API and MCP, early access | Any paid plan |
| Music-led, cinematic or colour-graded work | Not its strength: text-first interface; use a traditional editor | Look elsewhere |
| High-volume scheduled publishing | Render reliability complaints from teams at volume; test first | Trial before committing |
Five real gaps, not manufactured ones.
Underlord costs vary by model, length and task. Trustpilot has reviewers who say hundreds of credits vanished on a clean-up job.
Trustpilot reviewers report crashes while rendering; an Aug 2026 review says long projects strain the app and render reliability is the loudest complaint from teams at volume.
New plans arrived in Sept 2025 and legacy plans were migrated from Nov 17, 2025. Descript's own help article says some legacy subscribers may see costs rise, and unused transcription hours did not transfer.
Trustpilot has a recurring pattern of reviewers saying cancelling was difficult and refunds were denied despite stated policies. Descript's own page says you can cancel from the subscription page.
Fifth gap, smaller: it is text-first. One reviewer notes limited codec and bitrate control for broadcast delivery and no mobile editing, only viewing.
Descript is the text-first editor. Others win on cinematic control, avatars or meeting notes.
