Ideogram Review 2026: The Typography Specialist That Became a Platform — and Shipped a New Model Three Days Ago
Ideogram started in 2022 with a simple promise: pictures with words that are spelled right. In October 2026 it is a platform. On Sep 30 it launched Ideogram 4.5, a model built to edit an image repeatedly without drift; it has a layered Studio editor that can turn text inside a finished image back into editable text, a video app, an API and an MCP server, and, since June, open weights. It also hosts OpenAI and Google models next to its own. The most repeated claim about the open release, that it is Apache 2.0 and free for commercial use, is wrong for the weights. The free plan is 30 credits a week and fully public. This review checks what is true today against Ideogram's own docs, licensing pages and blog, independent coverage and real user sentiment.

| Ownership | Independent; $96.5M raised (Tracxn) |
| Free tier | Real but small — 30 credits a week, public |
| Cheapest paid plan | $20/mo Plus ($15 annual) |
| Newest model | Ideogram 4.5 (Sep 30, 2026) |
| Trustpilot record | 3.9/5, 165 reviews |
Ideogram stopped being "the one that spells words right" and became a small design platform. The licensing story is the part most coverage gets wrong.
"What surprised me most when I checked Ideogram this week was not the new model — Ideogram 4.5 launched three days ago, on Sep 30 — but how much the product around it has changed. Ideogram now runs partner models from OpenAI and Google next to its own, has a video app, a layered editor that can turn the text in a finished image back into editable text layers, an API with an MCP server, and an open-weights release. And the single most repeated claim about that release, that it is open and commercial under Apache 2.0, is wrong in the way that matters: the code is Apache 2.0, the weights are not."
That correction, and a free plan that now gives 30 credits a week with everything public, are the two things I would want a buyer to know before paying. Everything else is better news: pricing is clearly documented (last verified by Ideogram itself on Oct 1), commercial use of outputs is stated plainly, and typography is still where Ideogram leads. If you make posters, packaging, ads or anything with words in it, this is the first tool to try. If you want painterly mood above all, Midjourney still has the look.
One prompt box, six kinds of tool behind it — and rivals' models in the picker.
Ideogram is a text-to-image company founded in 2022 by Mohammad Norouzi (CEO), William Chan, Chitwan Saharia and Jonathan Ho. Its original pitch was legible text in images. The current product is broader: an Image app with Auto model selection, a Studio editor with layers, a Video app, single-job Apps (Ad Resizer, Background Remover, Colorways, Material Swap, Object Remover), Custom Models, Batch generation, an API and an MCP server, on the web and iOS.

Unlike several products JAVIS has reviewed this year, Ideogram has not been acquired. Its own models sit next to rivals' models in the same picker, which tells you where the company thinks the value is: the workflow, not any single model.
A well-funded independent that is now competing by opening up its model and hosting its rivals.
Launched Sep 30, 2026; "most precise edit model" per Ideogram.
9.3B-parameter Ideogram 4.0 on Hugging Face; non-commercial weights licence.
Seed $16.5M plus $80M Series A (Feb 2024, a16z). Tracxn; no 2026 round found.
Hugging Face API count on Oct 3, 2026. Downloads are not users.

Good marks for text and support. Real friction around credits and the free plan.
Praise centers on image quality and typography and, unusually, on support: one reviewer calls the support team "the best". Complaints cluster on billing and the free plan: one says the free plan is "effectively useless for testing image editing", another that an edit job "will use all your credits and NEVER get done".
Reports a shrinking free tier (an App Store reviewer recalls 25 credits a day; slow-queue waits of up to 20 minutes on Reddit) and complaints that reference-image generation moved to priority credits only. JAVIS could not verify the older free-tier figures; the current official figure is 30 credits a week.
The docs confirm the mechanism behind the complaints: after monthly credits run out, Plus, Pro and Team keep generating in a slower queue, but custom models, partner models, reference-image generations and edits still need credits. A user who reads "unlimited" can be surprised.
Four self-serve tiers, a thin free plan, and credits that burn fastest on edits.

Your answer depends on whether words, editing or licensing matter most.
Start on Free to test, then Plus. This is Ideogram's home turf.
Try Ideogram 4.5 (Plus or above for private work); Ideogram's own comparisons are vendor claims, so test your own images.
Pro: Custom Models train on 15-100 images for 4,000 credits.
API plus the MCP server; API calls spend the same credits as the app.
The public weights are non-commercial. You need the $300/month self-serve licence or Enterprise.
Compare Midjourney first.
The new model is about editing, not about a prettier first image.
Ideogram 4.5, announced Sep 30, 2026, is built around one problem: image editors drift. Every edit tends to nudge pixels, colours and textures you did not ask to change, so a chain of five edits quietly ruins the picture. Ideogram says 4.5 copies untouched pixels exactly from your image, returns the result at your original width and height, accepts a mask to limit the edit, and holds shape, texture and colour steady across repeated edits. In the app it takes up to five reference images; in the API, up to four.
The company also says, on its own model page, that GPT Image and Nano Banana outputs "become unusable within a few edits" while 4.5 "stays clean". That is a vendor demonstration, not an independent test. The one independent number I found, relayed by an API-routing blog from Artificial Analysis, puts 4.5 mid-table: 34th of 167 for text-to-image and 23rd for editing, both with a few thousand votes. That fits a model that is specialised rather than best at everything.

| Model | Released | What it is for (per Ideogram docs) |
|---|---|---|
| Ideogram 4.5 | Sep 30, 2026 | Newest; the only Ideogram model that takes reference images; text or JSON prompts up to 10,000 characters; 1K or 2K. |
| Ideogram 4.0 | Jun 3, 2026 | Open-weights model (9.3B params); JSON prompts; very wide ratios such as 23:9 and 3:1; 1K or 2K. |
| Ideogram 3.0 | Mar 26, 2025 | Only model with style presets, style reference images, negative prompts and colour palettes; base for Custom Models. |
| Transparent 4.0 / 3.0 | 2026 / 2025 | Images with a clear background; 4.0 Transparent outputs 1K to 8K (above 2K is upscaled after generation). |
| Partner models | Various | GPT Image 2.0 and 2.5 variants, Nano Banana 2 and Pro (premium); Z-Image and P-Image-Ideogram (free). |
Ideogram's launch video for the model described above.
Published by the official "Ideogram" YouTube channel (youtube.com/@ideogram_ai).
- The problem it targets, edit drift, is real and shows up in every image editor.
- The docs are specific about what 4.5 does and does not accept (references, mask, resolution).
- Text in images stays a core strength of the 4.x line, with JSON prompts for exact placement.
- The "unusable within a few edits" comparison is Ideogram's own demo.
- Independent rankings put 4.5 mid-table for plain generation.
- Third-party sources disagree on 4.5 API prices (under one cent up to 22 cents per image depending on quality tier); confirm in Settings, Usage costs.
Prompt, then Studio, then export — with credits spent mostly on the middle step.

The workflow habit that makes sense: write the prompt carefully (or in JSON), let Auto pick a model, then fix words in Studio as text layers rather than re-rolling the whole image. Re-rolls and edits are the expensive actions, so moving text changes into layers is both a quality and a credit decision. Studio's fonts come from Ideogram's own library; you cannot upload your own.
Video through partner models, and bulk work through Batch and Apps.
Ideogram's Video app is premium-only (a paid plan or bought credits). It runs partner models rather than an Ideogram video model: Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0, Kling v3 Standard and MiniMax H3, plus an Auto option. You can start from text, from a start and optional end frame, or from references (images, video clips and audio). Seedance 2.5 accepts up to 9 images and 10 video clips as references. The app's button does not show a price; check Settings, Usage costs.

Automation: besides the API, Batch generation runs up to 500 prompts from a spreadsheet and returns a zip (Pro), and the single-job Apps (Ad Resizer, Colorways, Material Swap, Object Remover) take a short form instead of a prompt. Sensible if you produce catalogue or ad variants at volume.
API, MCP server, a Claude skill and open weights — the most agent-ready of the three image tools compared here.
Ideogram is unusually open to agents. Its MCP server (OAuth over streamable HTTP, per Releasebot's summary of Ideogram's release notes) exposes tools such as generate_image, edit_image, remove_background, reframe_image and train_model, and Ideogram's own June 12 blog post walks through using it from Claude, including a downloadable /ideogram-prompt Claude Code skill. The developer docs also expose an MCP server for coding assistants, and each v2 endpoint follows POST /v2/{content}/{action}/{model}. Ideogram 3.0 and P-Image-Ideogram are also listed in Leonardo.Ai's API docs, which is how competitors end up in each other's catalogues.
| Integration | What it does | Where documented |
|---|---|---|
| API v2 | Generate, remix, inpaint, upscale, remove backgrounds, video, tools; one credit balance shared with the app; default 10 in-flight requests | developer.ideogram.ai (official) |
| MCP server | Lets Claude and other agents generate, edit, describe and train | ideogram.ai/features/mcp and ideogram.ai/blog/claude-mcp (official) |
| Open weights | Self-host Ideogram 4.0 quantized weights | ideogram.ai/licensing (official); see Licensing section |
One credit pool, shared by the app and the API.
Ideogram's economics are one credit pool (one cent each when bought) used by the app and the API. Per-model costs load dynamically in Settings, Usage costs, so the table shows the pieces that are documented rather than a price list I cannot verify.
| What you are doing | What it costs (documented) |
|---|---|
| Trying it free | 30 credits a week (Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in); public output |
| Auto run, 4 images (docs example) | About 24 estimated credits, roughly $0.24 |
| Plan credits on Plus / Pro | 2,400 / 7,500 per month; no rollover |
| After credits run out (Plus, Pro, Team) | Ideogram models continue in a slower queue; custom models, partner models, reference images and edits need credits |
| Training a Custom Model | 4,000 credits (about $40 at the purchase rate), 15-100 images, Pro or Team |
| Extra credits | $10 / $20 / $50 / $100 or $1-$300 custom; expire after 365 days |
| API calls | Spend the same credits as the app; Enterprise has volume discounts billed separately |
| Self-hosting the open weights commercially | $300/month for 10,000 images, up to 100,000 images/month tiers; Enterprise above that |
Plain commercial terms for outputs, private from Plus, and a licensing nuance on the open weights.
| Question | What Ideogram says |
|---|---|
| Can I use outputs commercially? | Yes. Ideogram says it does not claim ownership of generated images; use them for any purpose including commercial, within its Terms and Acceptable Use Policy. You may not use outputs to train competing models. |
| Are my images private? | Free: everything is public. Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise keep new images private until you publish them. |
| What is not allowed? | Surveillance, biometric identification, military uses, CSAM, non-consensual intimate imagery and unlawful or rights-violating uses (licensing FAQ). |
| Can I delete images? | Image deletion is available to Plus and Pro subscribers (pricing page FAQ). |
| Refunds and cancellation | Handled in the Billing docs; the pricing FAQ states no discounts or free trials. |
| Path | Price | Commercial use? | Hosted by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open weights (Hugging Face, quantized Ideogram 4.0) | Free | No. Ideogram Non-Commercial Model Agreement: research, evaluation, personal projects | You |
| Self-serve commercial licence | $300/mo for 10,000 images/mo (up to 100K) | Yes for self-hosting; no resale or API-like access for third parties | You |
| Enterprise licence | Custom | Yes, incl. customer-facing products, full-precision weights | You or Ideogram |
| Ideogram API | Credits | Yes under API terms | Ideogram |

Best for people who ship words and variants, not people who want only painterly mood.
| Situation | Why Ideogram fits | Likely plan |
|---|---|---|
| Designer making posters, ads, packaging with real text | Typography, JSON prompts, Layerize text | Plus |
| Ecommerce team making product variants | Precise edit, Colorways, Material Swap, Batch | Pro |
| Brand team needing a consistent look | Custom Models trained on 15-100 images | Pro or Team |
| Developer or agent builder | API v2, MCP server, Claude skill | API credits |
| Painterly concept artist | Weaker fit than Midjourney for mood-first work | Compare Midjourney |

Four real gaps, not manufactured ones.
30 credits a week, only via Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in, with all output public. Trustpilot reviewers call it useless for testing editing.
Edits, reference images, partner models and custom models all need credits even after your plan's "unlimited" slow queue starts.
Reviewers describe reference-image features moving to priority credits and call it a bait-and-switch. The docs confirm the current rule; JAVIS could not date the change.
The 4.5 drift comparison is Ideogram's own demonstration, and the one independent ranking found has 4.5 mid-table for plain generation.
Ideogram is the typography and editing choice, not the cheapest or the most painterly.
| If you mostly need... | Compare Ideogram with... |
|---|---|
| The most distinctive, painterly look | Midjourney — no free plan, no API (JAVIS review) |
| A broad model hub with an API and Canva ties | Leonardo.Ai — token plans |
| Video as the main job | Runway — a listed 4.5 launch partner |
| Chat-style editing inside an assistant | ChatGPT Images (GPT Image) or Gemini's Nano Banana — both are also available inside Ideogram's picker |
| Self-hosting an open model for free | Other open-weight image models with permissive licences; Ideogram 4.0's weights are non-commercial |
| Product (entry paid tier) | Monthly price | Free tier? | Privacy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ideogram Plus | $20 ($15 annual) | Yes, 30 credits/week | Private by default on paid |
| Midjourney Basic / Standard | $10 / $30 | No | Stealth only from Pro, $60 |
| Leonardo.Ai Essential / Premium | $12 / $30 | Yes, 150 tokens/day | Private mode on paid plans |

Questions people are actually searching right now
Is Ideogram free?
Partly. Free accounts get 30 credits a week if they sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, and everything they generate is public. Email-and-password accounts get no free credits. Verified in the docs Oct 3, 2026.
How much does Ideogram cost?
Plus is $20 a month ($15 billed yearly) for 2,400 credits; Pro is $60 ($42 yearly) for 7,500; Team is $30 per user ($20 yearly) with 3,600 credits per user and a minimum of 2 users. Enterprise is custom. The Basic plan is no longer sold.
What is Ideogram 4.5?
Ideogram's newest model, launched Sep 30, 2026, focused on precise, multi-turn editing with minimal drift. It accepts reference images and masks. Ideogram says open weights are coming; they had not been released when this was checked.
Is Ideogram 4.0 open source and free for commercial use?
No. The inference code is Apache 2.0, but the downloadable weights are under the Ideogram Non-Commercial Model Agreement. Commercial self-hosting needs a $300 per month self-serve licence or an Enterprise deal.
Can I use Ideogram images commercially?
Yes. Ideogram says it does not claim ownership of generated images and you may use them commercially, subject to its terms and Acceptable Use Policy. Free-plan images are public.
Does Ideogram work with Claude?
Yes. Ideogram provides an MCP server and published a guide, with a Claude Code skill, for using it from Claude.
Does Ideogram make video?
Yes, through partner models (Seedance 2.5 and 2.0, Kling v3 Standard, MiniMax H3) in a premium Video app. Ideogram does not describe these as its own video model.
Who owns Ideogram?
It is independent. We found no acquisition; funding of $96.5M in total (seed and a Feb 2024 Series A led by a16z) per Tracxn.
